A PROMINENT road haulier, Mr George Hamer, has died at the age

of 91. Mr Hamer, pictured, operated his

business from Thorn Street Garage, in

Clitheroe. A native of Burnley, he moved to Bar-

row in the early 1950s. His first lorry was garaged in a local

mill yard until he expanded his business and bought his own premises. He was in business for more than 40

years and had, at its peak, eight vehicles carrying cloth and yarn, cement and mixed haulage. In the early 1970s he was joined in the

business by his late son, Ian A former chairman oi the Road Haulage Association, Mr Hamer retired

at the age of 70. He was a member of Clitheroe Royal

British Legion and Whalley Conserva tive Club. On retiring, Mr Hamer took up other interests including bowling. He was a member of Whalley Crown Green Bowling Team and the Bay Horse, Bar- row, snooker and darts teams, for which he won many trophies. He was, for a time, greenkeeper at Whalley Bowling Club and was still cut

ting the greens well into his 80s. A dedicated father and family man,

he was a devoted grandad and great- grandad. Mr Hamer loved his home, gardening,

cooking and baking biscuits using his late wife, Doris’s recipes. He also enjoyed a “jar” at his local.

The Bay Horse, at Barrow. Mr Hamer died peacefully at his

daughter’s home in Simonstone. The funeral was held yesterday at

Barrow United Reformed Church, prior to cremation at Accrington.

Weekend vandals in school attack

• 4 ^

CONCERNED teachers and gover nors at Whalley Primary School are considering installing CCTV cam eras after vandals attacked the school over the weekend. Offenders caused more than £200

damage when they threw stones to smash several windows on Saturday, and on Sunday, rubbish left for col lection was found scattered all over

the playground. The incident has angered chair

Teenage band plans concert for disaster

TEENAGE band Over sight is offering its musical talents to raise funds for the tsunami earthquake appeal. ■The group consists of

three 16-year-old boys, Neil Balfour, who is from Whalley and plays lead guitar, Chris Hindle, from Clayton-le-Dale, who plays the drums and Alex Flannagan from Fence, who plays bass. All pupils of Clitheroe

Royal Grammar School, the teenagers want to hear from people who are arranging fund-raising social events for the appeal. The band, which was

formed about two years ago when the musicians came together from previ ous bands, rehearse at weekends at Chris's house, where there are, fortunate

ly, no close neighbours! The members play a

wide range of music from 70s, 80s, 90s up to modern day covers and also write their own material. The band has recently

recorded its own album: “Full of Mistakes”, which is on sale from the band or Reidy’s Music in Black

burn. The lads have also

already played a number of gigs including concerts a t the Royal Oak Pub, Clayton-le-Dale, on New Year’s Eve for two years running, to which the reac tion was fantastic. Anyone who would like

the band to play a t a tsunami earthquake appeal fund-raising event should call Chris’s father, Karl, on 07831 303539. Pictured are members of

the band, (s)

man of governors Mr David Bor land, who was the first to discover the damage and spent the weekend boarding up windows and clearing

the rubbish. He said: “In the past few weeks

incidents have occurred, which nor mally have not involved damage to the property, but have involved intruders leaving candles and broken beer bottles on site.

“This has resulted in staff clearing

the broken glass as we are concerned tor the safety of young pupils and

parents. “Our main priority is the children’s

safety and because of the vandalism we now have to think about CCTV

cameras.” A similar opinion was shared by

headteacher Mr Brian Beresford who is now holding meetings with the governors in a bid to install the cam

eras. He said: “We have had problems

with unwelcome visitors in the past and some of the ‘peculiar’ incidents have included a variety of graffiti on the exterior walls and in one case a child’s pram was left on the roof. “We are now seriously considering

CCTV cameras to deter the vandals away from the school building and the nearby area.”

Wild flower slides prove real delight to naturalists’ group

“WILD Flowers in Lancashire” was the topic of Mr Gerry Stephens’ talk to Clitheroe Naturalist Society. Mr Stephens stepped in at short

notice to replace Dr Brian Barnes, who was unable to give his planned lecture because of illness. He showed more than 100 slides to

illustrate his talk, which, he said was inspired by the Wildlife Trust publi cation “Wildlife in Lancashire”. Members of the audience recog

nised nature reserves and the loca tions of flowers and insects shown. Beginning at Leek Fell, the highest

point in the county, and ending on the Lytham coast, Mr Stephens, showed some beautiful specimens of flowers, shrubs, butterflies and insects that are still to be found by the discerning observer throughout the seasons. He divided his talk into a variety of habitats - fells, wetlands, canal and riverbanks, woodlands.

grasslands, limestone pavements, salt

marshes and dunes. His slides reminded members of

places near to home, such as Salthill and Crosshills quarries. His pho tographs of spiders' webs covering the fields on the banks of the Ribble was particularly striking. A long time member of the Fylde

Naturalist Society he has a memo rable record of the flowers he has seen over 30 years including two pho tographs of the rare Lady’s Slipper taken in flower before being dug up by an unknown vandal. He was generous in his invitation

to Clitheroe Naturalists to join him and members of the Fylde group in one of their early summer walks to an area in which there are many orchids to be seen. The next lecture, in the library, is at 7-30 p.m. on Jan uary 27th - “Diving around Scot land” - by Mr David Moss.
