PUPILS of Chatburn CE Pri mary School received top marks recently from the Bish op of Burnley who paid them

an honorary visit. The Right Rev. John Goddard

visited the school accompanied by the Rev. Rodney Nicholson. He spent time chatting to

pupils during his tour of the

parishes. The visit, which is one of 15 he

will make in the area, enables the bishop to meet different people and learn about their community. Mr Nicholson, who has been the

priest of Chatburn for nearly two years, said that the bishop was

impressed by the pupils of the pri mary school. He added; “The bishop was delighted by the warm welcome and liveliness he received from the pupils, who he even man aged to learn a few things from.” Our picture shows the bishop

with some of the pupils he met. (S120105/2)

BRACKEN, Boris and Otto were the VIP guests at Read's

PACT meeting. The three police dogs were

accompanied by their handlers, PC Wood, of Pennine Division, and PC Ellis, of Eastern Division. The Police and Community

Together meeting was held at Read CE School and attracted some 40 local residents. I t was explained that police dogs

played a vital role in modern police work due to their naturally power ful sense of smell and agility. They are used to find drugs, weapons and explosives, but are also trained to track and catch criminals and for

crowd work. To create the all-important spe

cial bond with their handler, the dogs live with them, housed in ken nels outside the handler's home. General purpose dogs, such as

Otto and Boris, are used for search and tracking. The dogs can search areas much faster than a lone officer and their ability to scent humans is useful in finding people who are hid ing or lost. They are also used to assist in crowd control situations at events such as football matches.

Specialist dogs are trained to

search for drugs, weapons and explosives. Lancashire is currently a leading force in this area, as all spe cialist dogs are currently being trained to search for firearms, as well as drugs, because experience has shown that a number of drugs dealers also have concealed

weapons. Eastern Division, which covers

Blackburn, Hyndbum and the Rib- ble Valley, has the highest number of police dogs and the dog handlers present stressed the hope that this

could be replicated throughout the

county. A member of the public asked if

the dogs would tackle armed assailants. The dog handlers report ed that the dogs were trained to dis arm offenders with weapons such as knives and baseball bats, but only a select few dogs were trained to work with firearms units. After the dogs retire from police work, they continue to live with

their handlers. The next meeting takes place on May 11th at Whalley Village Hall.

CROSSLAND - JACKSON

A HISTORIC castle hotel in Yorkshire was the venue for one Ribble Valley couple’s nuptials. Miss Donna Jackson and Mr

Ripon. The bride, an executive assis

Jackson, of London. The bridegroom, a system s ^

development engineer, is the son of Mrs Freda Crossland, ot West Bradford and Mr Ronnie Crossland, who lives m France. Given away by her father, the

bride wore a floral and crystal embroidered strapless bodice, with an organza fish

tail skirt and train. She carried a hand-tied bou

quet of black baccara roses and calla lillies with crystals and

feathers. Chief bridesmaid was Miss

Holly Woodworth, the bride's sister, who attended the bride along with bridesmaid Miss Anna Woodworth, also the bride’s sister. Miss Karen Chaplin and Miss Karen Light- foot, both friends of the bride. They all wore pale gold halter- neck satin dresses and carried a bouquet of long stem deep red

roses with gold grasses. The bridegroom had two
