tralians have a simple recipe for producing a car with decent per­ formance and plenty of mid­ range ‘ooihph’. They work on the principle of ‘there ain’t no substitute for cubic inches’ and drop in the biggest engine


that will fit. That approach has


also been used to excellent effect by Peugeot here in Europe when creating the diesel versions of


. its small hatchbacks. Back in t h e ‘80s,


the French company developed a strongly performing yet frugal 205 by substituting a 1.8 diesel for the 1.1- litre petrol engine. When they added a

The sporty DTurbo vari­ ant arrived and was subsequently replaced by the remarkably similar £12,470 XSi HDi featured here, but effectively the same 2.0-litre HDi powerplant is also offered on a range of other three and five- door 206 models. This is the same
