Naturalists’ ramble in the Lune Valley

A SEVEN-MILE stretch of the Lune Valley Ram ble was enjoyed by a party of 21 Clitheroe Natural ists at the weekend. The group made its way

from Lyon Bridge, near Hornby, to Devil’s Bridge a t Kirkby Lonsdale. Lyon Bridge is the only

road bridge over the Lune between the Crook of Lune and'Kirkby Lons dale. I t is an ancient cross ing point which was guarded in times past by Castle Stede motte and bailey castle, the remains of which are still in evi dence. The beginning of the

walk was dampened by a steady drizzle, but by lunchtime, enjoyed in the surroundings of Arkholme Church, the weather had cleared. The old church was built in the bailey of another motte and bailey strongpoint, protecting an old ford across the river. The ramble on well-

established footpaths and tracks - and in one section near Holden on a permis sive path - followed the course of the River Lune. The woods and mead

ows were lush with sum mer growth and resonant with birdsong.

Altogether 51 species of

flowers were recorded together with many wood land birds, including gar den warblers, blackcap

•and willow warblers. Blackbirds, thrushes and chaffinches were in full song too. , One of the best attrac

tions of the walk was pro vided by the river itself and the views of the sur rounding landscapes: the Barbon Fells, Leek Fell and Ingleborough, their tops just shrouded in lift ing clouds as the day brightened. Birds about the river

were abundant. Dozens of oystercatchers nesting on the shingles or flying about calling to their off spring, graceful swans, restless sandpipers, a flock of seagulls chasing off a bold heron and, above all, hundreds of swallows and martins swooping over the water, all added to the pleasure of the walk. The next walk will be

next Saturday, June I8th, in the Dolphinholme area. Bookings for the coach, which will leave Clitheroe Interchange at 9-30 a.m., can be made by ringing Chris Pickles on 01200 421950.

Fire-fighters called in over electricity cable worries

FIRE-FIGHTERS were • called in to deal with an electricity cable problem in Main Street, Grindleton, on Saturday morning. Residents believe that

an electricity cable may have been damaged during work carried out on Friday. On Saturday morning,

homeowners heard loud bangs and crackling before sparks flew and flames leapt several feet in the air, causing much concern as the main gas pipe to prop

erties was in the hole which had been uncovered the day before. Fire-fighters quickly

closed the stretch of road from the Duke of York

, Hotel to Whitehall Lane until the United Utilities team arrived and isolated the damage. No residents were evacu

ated from their houses although several homes were mthout electricity all day until 5-30 p.m. when repairs were completed.

Meeting date change

A FULL meeting of Ribble Valley Borough Council planned for July 5th has been brought forward a day to Monday, July 4th. The reason is that the Local Govern ment ^Delation Conference, at Harrogate, begins on the fifth. The council meeting, to be held in the borough council

chamber in Church Street, Clitheroe, will begin at 7 p.in. and members of the public are welcome to attend. ■

Friends of Earth date

LOCAL environmental group Hyndbum and Ribble Val ley Friends of the Earth is holding its next ihonthly meet ing on Wednesday at the De Lacy Arms, in Whalley. The meeting, which will cover a range of local, nation

nil;,

al and global environmental concerns, will start at 7-30 p.m. All environmentally- minded new members are wel come.

Church entertains visitors from Redcar

SATURDAY was a big day and a busy one for the people' at Clitheroe United Reformed Church. Not only did they enter in

the spirit of the Clitheroe Sheepfest with their Make Poverty History sheep, but they invited 50 people from Redcar to come and enjoy Clitheroe’s Great Days events. The visiting group were

members of the East Cleve land Group of United Reformed Churches, where the Rev. Norma Johnson, the Clitheroe URC minister, was based prior to her move to Lancashire. Originally the party from
