NINETY per cent of parents admit that they are driven to distraction by their children and could be at risk while driv
ing. An RAC Foundation survey has shown that 91% of parents say they have been dis tracted by their children while driving and a further 7% said these distractions had led to accidents. Irate children also cause back seat distrac
tions and the survey revealed that while driv ing 23% of parents had got lost, 11% had nearly crashed into the car in front and 11% had been put in other potentially dangerous situations after being distracted by their chil dren. Parents reported that distractions from their children had nearly caused accidents in a number of frightening situations. One child was reported to have the habit of
throwing a toy, which once got januned under the brake peddle of the car. ■=-0ne parent was so distracted that she
drove past a traffic policeman at 95 m.p.h! One child had a habit of undoing his seat-
belt and climbing into the front of the car to change gear.

engenders a feeling of cultur al dislocation. Mazda made no secret of

the practicalities is where so many designs lose their way, but Mazda is keen to stress
that hand in hand with Jinba Ittai is the creation of a big fun factor. Five basic requirements
were defined to realise the concept. Firstly, the car would be as light as possible. Next, the cockpit would comfortably accommodate two full stature occupants with no wasted space. The basic layout would continue with the original’s front- engine rear-wheel drive con figuration, with the engine positioned ahead of the driv
er but behind the front axle for a 50:50 front to rear weight distribution. All four wheels would be attached by wishbone or multi-link sus pension systerns to maximize tyre performance, road grip and dynamic stability. Mnal- ly, the chassis would provide a solid connection between the engine and the rear
•mounted differential to sharpen throttle response. That the latest MX-5
