fruity wines at supermarket prices, like RAVENS WOOD Vintners Blend Zinfandel around the £7.50 mark, buy two bottles and save £3 from Majestic, but much more. The Californians like to
think of Zinfandel as a white mne hence the rise in popular ity of blush Zinfandel (rose to you and me) and, while I was in Florida last year, 1 pur chased an expensive (by their standards) £15 bottle of red Zinfandel only to be informed by the shop manager that this was more port in style to be had at the end of a meal. Well i t might have been
16% ABV, but it was perfect with our barbecue and we went back for more much to his surprise. In this country my prefer
ence is for CLINE, especially the old vines (over 50 years)
and the ancient vines series (over 75 years, but often up to 100 years old), St FRANCES and KENWOOD all from Sonoma county and of course RIDGE from San Francisco Bay area. There are many Zinfandels
grown around the world and one of consistent quality and at a reasonable price, just over £11 a bottle, is CAPE MENTELLE in Western Australia or IRONSTONE ZINFANDEL, around the £9 mark, is one of high quality with an extra ripeness of fruit th a t reminds me of home made jam. All are readily available
from D. Byrne and Booths. These are ideal candidates for barbecue wines with the big fruit, slightly smoked edge and spicy, peppery finish. All we need now is the weather.
Escape for an evening of pure entertainment
“Come Blow Your Horn” at the Royal Exchange, Manchester, until June 251h. Box office: 01618339831. Neil Simon is one of Amer
ica’s leading playwrights with a list of instantly recognisable successes. His credentials for comedy writing are unsur passed and many of his best plays are based on his own life, which gives them warmth and reality. Jacob Murray’s production
of the story of a Jewish fami ly and the love life of the sons exploits all the humour. Buddy is desperate to escape
the clutches of his Jewish Momma and his somewhat overbearing father to share the bachelor life of his broth er, Alan, who seems to have a girl for every day of the week. But as his younger brother begins to discover girls, Alan is finding that he wants only
one. 'All th e actors r'elish the
comedy. Malcolm Rennie and Amanda Boxer play the par ents to the hilarious hilt and make the best of every moment. This is an evening
of pure escapism. Go, enjoyl PIPPAMUNRO
