Andrew aims to run up £1,250 for charity

I ' i by Julie Magee

A RUNNER from Grindle- ton is on course to raise more than £1,000 for charity with

the help of his employers.: . Father-of-two Andrew

McEvoy (42), a financial direc tor at employment law, and health and safety consultancy First Business Support, plans to run more than 250km (156 miles) in competitive races this year to raise money for chil dren’s charity Cancer and Leuk aemia in Childhood. In an innovative approach,

the Rawtenstall-based compa ny is offering all employees the opportunity to sponsor Andrew for each kilometre he runs by simply taking a donation direct from their gross pay at the end of each month. This contribu tion is not taxed and all contri

butions up to the sum of £10 are then to be doubled by the Government. Commenting on the scheme,

Andrew, who trains at Hick’s Health and Rackets Club,

Clitheroe, said: “Since Decem ber, the scheme has really taken off within First Business Sup port and I am well on my way to reaching the target of £1,250. “The scheme has been set up

to make sponsorship easy, tax efficient and affordable. I t is really morale boosting to know that my colleagues support my passion for running and it gives me a great sense of achievement to know that I can combine my love for running with fund-rais ing for such a worthwhile cause.” Pictured is Andrew with his

six-year-old twin daughters, Emily and Eleanor, (s

Sabden was invaded by

Teddy bears! HEADS turned in Sabden when a large group of Teddy bears were found relaxing on the village green. Villagers were surprised to see

the cuddly toys of all shapes and sizes relaxing and were finding it difficult to determine whether or not they were having a picnic. On further investigation, they

found that the gathering was in aid of a “mug shot” for the Collector of the Month - a regular feature found in the “Teddy Bear Club Interna tional” magazine. Keeping the cheeky gang in hand

was Sabden resident Mrs Patricia Compton. Among the Teddy bears, was a 30-year-old bear called Tin ker. The oldest Teddy, aged 60, measured 22ins. and was called Bear. ■ Mrs Compton is pictured keep

ing the “mischievous” gang in con trol. (s)
