Clitheroe Advertiser & Times, October 28th, 2004 11 Pat on the back for the triers and fliers I Celebrations for award winners by Duncan Smith
HIGH fliers and hard triers had their efforts and achievements recognised over two days at St Augustine’s RC High School, Billing- ton. A Celebration Evening at the school marked the
achievements of last summer’s school leavers, many of whom returned with their family and friends for the event. The following day, awards were presented to pupils still at the school, recog nising not just those who regularly achieve top marks, but also those who continually strive for improvement. The Celebration Evening was also a time to
remember three good friends of the school, who had died during the previous year. Indeed, the school had been closed earlier in the day as a mark of respect tor former Kibble Valley headteacher Mr Peter Keegan, who died the previous week (see
article on page 11). So many of the staff and pupils at St Augus
tine’s wanted to attend Mr Keegan’s funeral last
Thursday that the decision was taken to close the school.
In his opening address to the Celebration
Evening, St Augustine’s headteacher Mr Antho ny McNamara said of Mr Keegan: “The untimely loss of this wonderful man has deeply affected aU who were privileged to know him. We will never forget his radiant smile and warm handshake both of which were true expressions of his affirm- ing and energetic personality.”

H Mr McNamara also remembered former pupil Becky Holt, who had died suddenly six months earlier and whose loss was still deeply felt throughout the school. “Like the Keegans, the Holts are a family with strong St Augustine’s connections,”

/ j said Mr McNamara. “Becky’s mum and dad are both teachers in the school, her sis ter, Francesca was our Head Girl and Sophie, her twin sister, is now in Year 10. The phrase which appeared under her pho tograph in the front of her Requiem Mass booklet encapsulated Becky - ‘She walked gently in the world’ - and though short, her life was graced with those lovely qualities which would make any parent or any school proud of her.” Finally Mr McNamara remembered
another special colleague. Julie Miller was a member of the school’s cleaning staff who sang as she worked and always had a smile for everyone. “Julie was hardworking and utterly reli
able,” said Mr McNamara. “Her links with St Augustine’s were longstanding and impor tant both to Julie and to Gary, her husband, whose two children, Simon and Bethany, were pupils in the school. “Julie’s family asked that funeral dona
tions should go towards our new chapel and, when it is completed, the first Mass to be celebrated there will be for the repose of her soul.” Despite those sad losses to the school com

munity, Mr McNamara stressed they should not overshadow the achievements of the young people who left last summer to further their education or enter the world of work. “By gathering together again in the compa ny of parents, teachers and representatives of the local community we have a final opportunity to show them how proud we are of their efforts and success,” he said. Among the guests at the celebration

evening were representatives of the many local businesses that supported the school’s successful bid to become one of the first Spe cialist Science Colleges in the country. Other guests included the Mayors and Mayoress es of the Kibble Valley, Clitheroe and Hynd- burn and priests from many of the local parishes. Also present was Mr Phil Morris, former
headteacher at St Augustine’s, whose daugh ter, Anne, hasjust joined the teaching staff there. Guest speaker for the evening was Mr
Mike Finley, the principal of St Mary’s Col lege in Blackburn, where more than 100 of this year’s St Augustine’s leavers have start ed their sixth form studies. In a break with tradition, much of Mr
McNamara’s address was delivered as a visual presentation, using some of the new technology now in place at the school to pro ject digital images of its everyday life. Many of the slides featured this year’s school leavers, evoking many happy memories and giving a flavour of life at St Augustine’s “Before we watch the presentation I want
to thank my colleagues, in whatever capaci ty they are employed at the school, foi" huge commitment they make to our pupils,
said Mr McNamara. “I want to thank our governors, in partic

ular our Chairman of Governors, Father Edmund Willoughby, who loves St Au^- tine’s as much as we all love him. I want to thank all the parents here for their unstint ing support over the past five years and above all I want to thank you, our students, who gave our community the gift of your selves during those roller coaster years when you went from being 11 to-being 16."- '

Fond farewells to a popular head teacher sees school close for day
MORE than 1,200 people attended the funeral of former Ribble Valley headteacher Mr Peter Keegan (pic tured), who died suddenly at the
age of 51. The former headteacher at St
Mary’s RC Primary School, in Langho, went on to serve as head at St Joseph’s RC Primary School, in Accrin^on, and St Alban's RC Pri mary School, in Blackburn. His family also has strong links with St Augustine’s RC High
, School, in Billington, where his wife, Anhe-Marie, teaches English and the youngest three of their five daughters - Laura, Anna, Susan, Helen and Jane - are still pupils. So many staff and pupils at St
Augustine’s wanted to attend Mr Keegan’s funeral that the decision was taken to close the school for the
day. Headteacher Mr Anthony
McNamara said: “Over the years Peter Keegan has seen hundreds of pupils pass through his care. He was a charismatic and hugely popular man whose company was enjoyed by children and adults alike because of his warmth and sense of humour. “Despite the pressures of his work
