Best for local enter Dish of the Week Wine Talk Weekend TV
compiled by DUNCAN SMITH (tek 01200 422324)! Good Godber!
JOHN GODBER is probably our best-known and most prolif ic living playwright and TV writer - and the inventive genius behind the latest produc tion by the Ribchester Amateur Theatrical Society. Born across the Pennines, Godber trained at Bretton Hall, Wakefield, where the RATS’ own Jo Shipman has just start ed a course. While still learning his craft, Godber won many stu dent and Edinburgh Fringe awards. His best-known plays include
GUY MASON
“Happy Families”, which the RATS performed several years ago, “Perfect Pitch” and ‘Thick as a Brick”, both of which members saw performed at the Bolton Octagon, and “On the Piste” and “Up 'n' Under” - the film version of which was recently shown again on TV. Another Godber triumph is
“Bouncers”, which the RATS will perform next month. Set in the 1980s, “Bouncers”
is a play about Friday and Sat urday night out in a Northern town. The bouncers of the title work at “Mr Cinders”, the disco in town where boy meets girl, boy kisses girl, girl throws up and boy gets bounced out! The wonderful and clever
KEITH FLOOD
thing about the play is tha t while we meet all the characters
- the bouncers themselves, the boys preparing for their night out, the girls at the hairdressers, the disc jockeys, a group of Hooray Henrys, punks and yuppies - there are only ever four people on stage. The same four actors portray
all the parts almost without leaving the stage. And who are these clever and versatile actors? Rob Hindle, Kevan Thompson, Guy Mason and Keith Flood are the cast. Directed and produced by
Robin Simmons, the play relies on lighting and music effects to help the actors set the scenes and here, Mike Standen has returned to twiddle the knobs. It is a very funny play, but
the language is strong and the sexual references are not for the faint-hearted. Robin recom mends, as a guideline for par ents, a minimum age of 15. “Bouncers” takes the stage at
Ribchester Parochial Church Hall on November 10th, 11th and 12th, with the bar open from 7 p.m. and curtain up at 7- 45 p.m. 'Tickets, priced at £4, are
available in advance from Jean Skilbeck on 01254 878530 or any committee member. You will not want to miss this
one. It's very funny and a bit dirty!

Satire on status o f celebrities
“DROWNING ON DRY LAND” at The Octagon Theatre, Bolton.
IDO like Sir Alan Ayckbourn’s plays and so, it seems, do many. I found myself sitting next to a whole bus load | from Clitheroe.
“Drowning on Dry Land” is an up-to-date satire on I
the modern cult of celebrity, the denizens of “Hello” and | “OK” and “I’m a Celebrity... Get Me out of Here!” Charlie Conrad (Stephen Beckett) is famous for being I
a no-winner and all-round good egg, but he finds himself entrapped by a foolish escapade with a children’s enter tainer and, 3vith stunning rapidity, he loses his fame, his money, his wife and his children. All this gives Ayck bourn opportunities for mocking the media, the law and | many other targets. The prize for the evening has to go to Stuart Fox in the I
wonderfully-written part of Hugo de Prescourt (in the tradition of Restoration Comedy names). In a comic tour-de-force he demolishes the case of seemingly pathet ic Marsha Bates (Sarah Moyle) and her lawyer, Simeon [ Biggs (Paul Kemp). Melanie Gutteridge plays Charlie’s unhappy wife, and I
Adrian Mcloughlin is Jason, his agent. Bille-Clare Wright is Gale, the venomous TV interviewer, initially ] out to destroy him, but later in need of his friendship, Stephen Beckett conveys all of Charlie’s naive charm ]
and succeeds in retaining the audience’s syihpathj'. Ayckbourn has a characteristic structure to his plays: I
shouting with laughter; followed by a more reflective I finale, which allows the characters and audience to I reflect on what has happened. I t works!
a clever, amusing first act, setting up the plot and char acters; then a hilarious second act that has the audience
