Valley’s MP reveals latest expenses claim

RIBBLE VALLEY MP Nigel Evans claimed £136,225 in expenses last year on top of his basic salary of £57,485 it was disclosed this week. It is the first time figures

detailing MPs' expenses have been published in what has been described as a move to take a significant step towards openess and accountability. Members decided to

release the information vol untarily before the Free dom of Information Act forces them to do so from January. Conservative MP Mr

Evans posted details listing his expenditure for the past three years on his website back in August. The information shows

th a t from April 2003 to March 2004 Mr Evans, whose constituency office is based on Railway View in Clitheroe, claimed £75,546 in staff costs, £20,236 for members' travel, £20,333 in additional cost allowances and £20,110 Incidental Expenses Payment (lEP). Meanwhile, Pendle MP

Gordon Prentice claimed £63,154 in staff costs, £15,573 for members' trav el, £20,333 in additional cost allowances and £17,900 lE P -a to ta l of £116,960. Skipton and Ripon MP David Curry claimed

£71,773 in staff costs, £12,132 for members' trav el, £10,192 in additional cost allowances and £16,441 lEP - a total of £110,538 Blackburn MP and For

eign Secretary Jack Straw claimed £62,500 in staff costs, £4,454 for members' travel, £12,877 in addition al cost allowances and £18,799 lEP - a total of £98,630. The figures show MPs

claimed £78 million in expenses last year - an average of £118,437 each on top of their basic salary of £57,485 and generous pension provision. That was an increase of £20.56 million on 2001-2002. They also show the aver

age backbencher receives £175,922 a year in total, compared with the nation al average wage of just over £20,000. The

Independent

Review Body on Senior Salaries has said some allowances are too gener ous. It has called for the car

allowance of 57.7p per inile to be cut to 40p - the rate recommended by the Inland Revenue. I t also concluded that

there was no case for a fur ther pay rise for MPs this year above the two per cent increase tha t came into effect in April.

Ramblers head out for new territory!

by Vivien Meath

CLITHEROE'S ramblers have trodden new ground! The organisation has gone into print

with its very first book. For two years, members of Clitheroe

Ramblers supplied the Valley magazine with monthly walks around the area. They were exceptionally well received

by readers, with many requests for back copies from avid followers. At the beginning of 2004, work began

to collate the walks - all of which were accompanied by a detailed map - into a book. I t was a new experience for all con

cerned, with page proofing, editing and subbing among a few of the new skills quickly acquired. The result is: "25 Walks in the Ribble

and Hodder Valley." The book contains eight pages of colour photographs and each map has

been beautifully sketched by Mike Waters. This newspaper's editor Vivien

Meath was delighted to launch the book at Clitheroe Tourist Information Centre. Appropriately, the book launch coin

cided with the birthday of the man whose inspiration it was, the late Mr Frank Parrott. It was Mr Parrott this newspaper

contacted in 2002 requesting the ram blers' help in producing a monthly walk for the Valley magazine. He agreed and supplied the first two

walks with accompanying sketch maps. Sadly, Mr Parrott died while on a

holiday and the third walk was pro duced by the newspaper's editor and her husband, Michael. Mrs Pat Parrott than asked mem

bers of the Clitheroe Group of the Ramblers' Association for their help in continuing the series and it was quickly

forthcoming, with a rota of volunteers. Group chairman Jane Donnelly

expressed thanks to everyone who had helped in ensuring that the ramblers' first book came to fruition at the launch. With 1,000 copies printed, the group

is confident that initial sales already indicate that it mil be be well received throughout the Ribble Valley, and will be of particular benefit to the many hundreds of people who walk in the area each year. The book is on sale at various out

lets, including Clitheroe Library, Whal ley Warm and Dry, Ken Varey's, Onward and Outward, Kaydee and Clitheroe TIC, priced £5.99 and is already selling "like hot cakes!" Pictured is editor Mrs Meath (cen

tre), with members, officials and guests, including borough council chief executive David Morris and tourism officer Jane Silvester at the launch. (A211004/6)

Hope from heartbreak for super slimmer Lucy

LOSING their beautiful baby daughter, Annabel Grace, to a mys tery illness at just 22 months was a devastating blow for Barrow couple Lucy and Matthew Turner. Just one of the consequences for

loving mum Lucy was tha t in the following weeks and months, her weight crept steadily up, the result

■ of comfort eating as she struggled to come to terms with their grief. Then, as she and her husband

struggled to rebuild their lives, Lucy fell pregnant again and they were thrilled when baby Eva May was born and given a clean bill of health. In many ways, th a t new life

meant a new start for Lucy too and the motivation to lose the extra three stones th a t she had gained almost without noticing. It was a cold, miserable January

night when she and her mother entered Janet Brown’s “Slimming World” group in Accrington, but the friendly and welcoming atmosphere soon put them a t their ease. Incredibly, just six months later Lucy was three stones lighter and

celebrating achieving her target weight, thanks to the help and sup port from the other members in the group. “I was never judged or humiliated

on my weight loss journey,” said Lucy.

“Everyone in the group knows

how you feel and the consultant is with you every step of the way.” Lucy was so impressed and enthu

siastic about the eating plan - where no food is banned and healthy eat ing is encouraged - that she is now set to help others shed the excess pounds. She has trained to become a Slim

ming World consultant and will host her first class a t Langho Football Sports and Social Club, off Longsight Road, next Tuesday at 7- 15 p.m.

For more details, phone Lucy on

01254 824948. Our pictures show Lucy after pil

ing on the pounds and as she is today, three stones lighter.
