Juniors to the fore at Clitheroe GC

CLITHEROE Golf Club was taken over by its junior section on Saturday for their first-ever prize presentation evening. More than 30 junior members received

a certificate of achievement, which they had attained during the year by attend ing a number of coaching sessions. The prize presentation saw Richard

Thompson win the Easter Trophy, Jack Rothwell the Spring Trophy, Jacob Foley the Summer Trophy and Andrew Mercer the Stableford Trophy. To claim these prizes, juniors had to

excel in a series of events throughout the season. Foley also landed the President’s Day

prize, and other prizes were awarded to Jordan Cook (Captain’s Day), William Tyrell (Collier Shield) and Andrew Hee- som (Junior Knockout). Richard Tyrell won the Junior Club

Championship for the second successive year, and William Tyrell was named as the most-improved player. And there were double honours for

Sarah Hale. She claimed the Junior Championship

nett prizes and also the overall champi onship for the lowest average nett score during the course of the year.

BILLINGTON A are top of the embryonic Clitheroe and District Snooker League First Division. They made it two wins from two with

a 10-4 success over Chatburn A, who find themselves at the bottom. Royal British Legion are two points

behind Billington after a similar victory at home to Talbot B. In the Second Division, Catholic

Club are top by two points after a whitewash win over bottom side Police. Talbot A and Waddington B are in

close pursuit, both boasting 100% records.

market road to Stone Ends farm, the party located the Rake Trod foot path, which traverses the slopes below Carrock Fell’s eastern crags and climbed steeply via scree and a grassy gully to the summit, which is surrounded by a ruined wall marking the location of an ancient hill fort. Aided by strong following winds,

the group walked along a broad sad dle to Milton Hill, Drygill Head and High Pike where a seat constructed from slate slabs provides an excellent viewpoint southwards to the high skyline of the Skiddaw-Blencathra range, and northwards to the Solway Firth and the Scottish hills. Returning to Drygill Head in a

chilling headwind, members hurried to a restored bothy, the Lingy Hill hut, where lunch was enjoyed in

warmth and comfort, prior to a descent to Grainsgill Beck, and then a climb to the featureless summit of the Knott. In gathering clouds, members

retraced their steps to Grainsgill Beck, then continued to Carrock mine where lead, and later tungsten, were extracted. A long walk adjacent to the banks of the river Caldew, where a herd of around 30 fell ponies were grazing, brought members back to Mosedale, just before the heavens opened and heavy rain set in for the rest of the day. The club's next outdoor meet will

be a family weekend at Braithwaite near Keswick on November 5th and 6th, followed by the annual meeting a t Clitheroe CC on Thursday, November 18th starting at 8 p.m. A day meet at Kettlewell will be held on Sunday, November 21st, leaving the council offices car park at 8 a.m. Further details about any of the

club's activities may be obtained from the secretary on 01200 441346.

Young athletes take sport in their stride

INTRODUCED only a few months ago to the sport of athletics. Years 5 to 8 at Oakhill College in Wlialley, near Clitheroe, have really taken it in their stride. Using the newly-acquired throwing

equipment at the school, they have enjoyed learning throwing skills including primary shots, discus, turbo javelins and mini hammers. They have also pursued running events both in lessons and during lunchtime, and also in after school practices. Physical Education teacher Mrs

Lee opted to further promote the sport by using the Norwich Union Shine Awards, which give pupils the opportunity to try athletics through fun physical challenges, and it also provides the incentive to develop indi vidual athletic skills. Integral to the scheme is a comput

er programme for recording and analysing results, which means that each pupil can then keep a check on their nroeress towards eaminn one of

the five levels of badges available from green to gold. Recently the children attempted

the Star Track Challenge Awards, which required athletes to accumulate points for their three best perfor mances in different events. Five pupils gained the coveted gold

medals and certificates - Thom Field ing, Natasha Duckworth, Roy Gill, Sophie Hindle and Gemma Bland. Next year the scope of events will

be further widened at Oakhill, with the completion of a new long jump pit, which is currently being prepared on the school fields. As PE teacher Mrs Lee remarks,

“It is fantastic to see the children so enthused and committed to the sport, and the progress that they have made in such a short period of time is strik- ine indeed.”

KC i ’/ i Also announced at this prestigious

event was the name of the junior captain for 2005, with Andrew Heesom set to take over from James Jackson. “Save the best till last” was the com

ment as John Fryer and Michael Pate posted their card in the fast-fading day light at the gentlemen’s Turkey Shoot at Clitheroe GC on Sunday. Carl Drinkwater and Scott Thompson

had pipped John Peel and Dave Hillary on the cards, both with 42 points, and looked the likely winners. But the Fryer-Pate combination

rewrote the scripts by coming in last out of the gloom to take the top prize. Three pairs on 41 points battled it out

for the minor prizes. Alan Clarke and Geoff Cartledge took

fourth from John Drew and Oliver Drinkwater, leaving Ted and Gary Speak unlucky on the cards with the same score. The open multi-mixed Turkey Shoot at

Clitheroe on Saturday fell foul of the weather and had to be cancelled. But Marilyn Fletcher emerged as the

clear winner of the ladies’ nine-hole Turkey Shoot with 23 points. Rosemary Sims (18) was runner-up ahead of Jane Chandler (16).

Keith stars in St Mary’s easy victory

KEITH Rudd was the star as Clitheroe St Mary’s enjoyed a comprehensive 7-2 win over Allspeeds in group nine of the East Lancashire Table Tennis League Allspeeds Cup. And Whalley Reserves

made it a miserable night for Allspeeds, beating their reserve side 5-4 in group seven. Phil Mileham was the

pick of the locals as they opened their campaign. Elsewhere, G&T were

indebted to Bill Read, who won all his games in a 5-4 win over in-form Brier field. Tridents came away
