Welcome to this year's Christmas
Local lads show \Z"Z!Tol opponents how to play football
EOY of the Rovers has nothing on these lads, the soccer sensa tions from Clitheroe Round
Table. They emerged victorious
from an Inter-Table Pive-a- Side Football Tournament, beating Fleetwood 3-1 in a grip ping final to IFt the trophy. The Clitheroe squad - Craig
Nicholls, Trevor Wilson, Colin Price, Paul Harrison, Walter Aspinall and Paul Barnes - took on teams from Blackburn,
[Kirkham and Blackpool to reach the final against trophy holders and tournament hosts
! Fleetwood. First blood went to pacy
winger Harrison, who took out two Fleetwood defenders by shaping to shoot across the goal before cunningly sliding the ball past the stranded keeper and into the net at the near post. This kicked the opposition
into action and Clitheroe had to repel wave af ter wave of Fleetwood attacks, with goal mouth guardian Barnes excelling himself on a number of occasions. Clitheroe proved committed
in defence, with Price and Wil son putting in some mean tack les as the pressure built. Pas sions really started to run high and some of the ref’s more dubi ous decisions began to frustrate the Clitheroe side. In fact mid-
field general Aspinall was booked following a midfield war of words between Price and the man in black tor insinuating the latter may have been offered free pints subject to the result! Then came the turning point
as Clitheroe captain Nicholls picked up the ball at the edge of his own penalty area and embarked on a mazy dribble down the left flank and into the opposition’s half. Everybody present must
have thought that surely the greedy so-and-so was going pass eventually, but somehow he kept going, beating practi cally the entire Fleetwood side one by one. He even dribbled past the same defender twice at one point before smashing the ball past the helpless keeper and embarking on by far the loudest and most emphatic goal celebration of the day. The second half was much
the same b u t you could tell Fleetwood's hearts were not really in it and when Harrison and Nicholls combined for a tidy third, the game was effec
tively over. Only Clitheroe’s closing
stages complacency allowed a dejected Fleetwood squad the consolation of a single goal. Our picture shows Clitheroe’s
sporting giants with their tro phies. (s)
