CLITHEROE are on the verge ot winning through to their first final in four years. " ■ The Blues defeated North West Counties’ Second Division high flyers Padiham 4-1 on Saturday in the first leg of their semi-final clash ; in the Worthington Challenge Tro phy.. ;•
; ' And now Lee Sculpher will be
confident his group of players will be able to finish the job off when the return leg takes place on March 8th at the Arborie, and book a final place at Bury’s Gigg Lane, most' probably against Mossley, who lead Newcastle Town 4-1 in the other semi-final. Clitheroe’s last final appearance
came under Steve Parry in 1999 when they defeated Kidsgrove
Athletic 2-1 in the Floodlit Trophy. Sculpher said: “I was very
pleased. Obviously to be’ three goals ahead at the half-way stage is
a good start for us. “But I was slightly disappointed;
with the level of performance..I just thought we did not play as well as we can do, we were a little off the
pace. • “But you would hope that we
can finish the job off in the second leg.
- “I think Padiham made two bad
defensive mistakes for the first two goals and in a game like that you can’t afford to do that.” However, Sculpher had no such
qualms with his side’s display on Tuesday night away at Salford City.
The Blues leap-frogged City into
second-place in the NWC First Division thanks to a resounding 4- 1 victory. Sculpher added: “It was one of
. our best performances of the sea son. We fully deserved the victory; we were well on top throughout. • “Our work-rate was pleasing and
our quality on the ball was good. I thought the four midfield players were excellent.” Clitheroe stand a massive 20
points behind leaders Prescot Cables in the league table, with four games in hand but Sculpher has s t i l l not given up hope on catching the Merseysiders. “I think there’s only us and pos-
■ sibly Mossley who have a chance of catching Prescot.
I t ’s between us three, but
Prescot keep winning. We just have to hope that they have a’bad week or two.” Clitheroe welcome Nantwich
Town to Shawbridge on Saturday with a couple of injury problems. Lee Cryer and Adam Gardner
are both doubtful with ankle injuries, while Andy Cowking is
unavailable. 1 .Meanwhile, Lee Buggie has
joined Rossendale United, but Sculpher has managed to entice Paddy Lauber back to the club after an enforced lay-off through work commitments. Clitheroe are at home to Ather
ton LR on Tuesday (7-45 p.m.). The reserves are away to Skelmers- dale United on Saturday (3 p.m.).

impressive display in the Worthington Challenge Trophy on Saturday, the Blues once again came out comfortable winners against one of the stronger teams in the division.' Clitheroe had the better
of the early exchanges, Chris Whittingham firing wide from a tight angle as early as the third minute. ' Four minutes - later Clitheroe took the lead when Neil Spencer, and Chris Whittingham linked- up well, and Salford’s James Brown could only turn Whittingham’s cross from the right into his own net. Gary Jackson and
Spencer both had chances to increase the lead and forced good saves out of the. Salford keeper. Salford’s best first, half
chance came after quarter of an hour, but from a good position, Ross Hartford . lobbed his chance over the bar. A long throw from Mark
Stewart midway through the first half was deftly headed on by Jason Jones at the near post, the ball seemed to ricochet off a Salford hand, and the refer ee had no hesitation in pointing to the spot.. Mark Stewart confident
ly dispatched the resulting penalty to double Clitheroe’s advantage going
into the interval. . A flowing move three
minutes after the break saw Whittingham, Jones'and Jackson all combine to put Neil Spencer clear, but the Clitheroe captain saw his shot slide wide of the post with the keeper beaten. Kris Richens had to be
alert a few minutes later when Hartford broke
.though on goal, but Clitheroe’s keeper saved well with his feet. The Blues increased their
lead on 55 minutes when Lee Sculpher’s free-kick
' was met sweetly by Andy Cowking, who volleyed home from 10 yards. Salford seemed to lose
heart after this and spent as much time arguing with the referee and themselves as they.did trying to get back into the'game, and Kelly
■ nearly scored City’s second own goal of the game, forc ing the goalkeeper to finger tip his header over, the crossbar. With 10 minutes remain
ing, Clitheroe gave away possession on the edge of the area and this allowed
Spencer’s crucial cup hat-trick

created in the first quarter of the game, Chris Whit tingham having a shot on the volley well saved by Kirk Marsden in the Padi ham goal, while Gary Jack son’s run on goal was foiled by the visiting keeper, with Andy Cowking’s follow-up effort scrambled off the line. The breakthrough even
tually came in the 25th minute when Barrie Hart crowed from the left, Mars- deh seemed to hesitate in
coming for the ball, and Neil Spencer was quickest to react and head the Blues ■ into the lead. Padiham took a while to
settle and Kris Richens in; the Clitheroe goal had an uneventful first half. The crowd of just under
400 didn’t have to wait too long for the second goal. On 37 minutes, Padiham failed to clear a long throw from Mark Stewart, and in the goalmouth scramble that followed, Spencer was on hand to crash the ball home to provide Clitheroe a well deserved two-goal cushion. Padiham came out for the
second period in a more pos itive frame of mind, and Gary Rishton had. to be alert for Clitheroe to clear a dangerous centre from Dar ren Fullard on the left.,

Clitheroe had another goal to celebrate. The hard-work ing Jones ran through on the right-hand side, holding off one challenge before skip ping around two defenders and scoring past the out stretched arm of Marsden. Padiham, with nothing to lose, threw caution to the
wind and brought on an extra striker in former Blues striker Dean Stowe, who caused problems at times for the Clitheroe backline. . They gained a lifeline in ,,
tlieconteston 60 minutes!' when Rishton failed to clear his lines and ex-Clitheroe favourite Ian Pilkington was on hand to score and pro vide hope for the Second Division outfit. However, five minutes
later, they were down to 10 men when Carl Parker was sent-off for a second book able offence. Richens dealt competent

comeback was short-lived, as less than a minute later Jackson burst through the middle to score the fourth and make the game safe. Spencer had a chance
late on to further increase the lead but saw his shot well saved by the keeper. The only downside to the game was the substitution of Adam Gardner with what seemed to be a nasty ankle injury.
