North Sea to the Baltic. But he soon discovered th at modem day Scandinavia is

Russian Lapland, by Roger Took, Published by John Murray, Priced £18.99
AUTHOR Roger Took is almost certainly the first for eigner since the Russian Civil war of 1918-1920 to have
explored the region extensively. He has witnessed, a t first hand, the disturbing after-
math of communism. Took lived among remote reindeer herding and hunt ing families and followed the lives and traditions of the
' indigenous Lapps or Saami. Took met pioneering villagers who descended from
medieval Novgorod( fur-traders and who were learning to cope with the new economy. He also met the men and women originally forced
n o r th to mine Russ ian L apland's fabulous mineral wealth, but who arte now unemployed and stranded. A truly powerful book.

A Rose for Winter: Travels in Andalusia, by Laurie Lee, Published by Vintage Classics, £6.99
MANY will remember studying Laurie Lee's classic - A Cider with Rosie - for A-level. Another classic is Lee's wonderful book centred on
Andalusia. Lee found a country broken by the Civil War, but with
the totems of indestructible Spain having survived. The book brings alive emotions of flamenco, bull-fight
ing and whitewashed slums and is full of rich and kalei doscopic images of a beautiful part of Southern Spain.
“From a Jack to a King” at Oldham Coliseum IF you have a ta s te for rock and roll, a b i t of country and western and the songs of Elvis, and if you are not too much of a purist when it comes to Shakespeare, th en youf will enjoy “From a Jack to a King”. I t is enormous fun, a
foot-tapping, hand-clap ping, laughter-making version of th e Scottish Play. E r ic Clamis (Max
Rubin) is tempted by the love of Queenie (R u th Alexander) an d th e prophesies of three of the' weirdest sisters I have ever seen (David Gay, M a t th ew H ew i t t and Kerry James) into killing th e lead singer, T e r ry King, a g re a t Elvis impersonator (Howard Gay). Manager Duke Box (M a t Baker) and cop Jqe Macduff (Adam. Keast) join forces with Laura (Tracey Holder- ness) to bring him to jus t ic e in a f ig h t to th e death - with guitars. All is performed with
g re a t songs and very clever sc r ip t by Bob Ca r lto n th a t a d ap ts appropriate Shakespear ian quotes from several plays. I boasted th a t I recognised most, but my companion, who is even more familiar with the works of the Bard than I, outdid me. I t is p a r t of the pleasure to see how they have been skilfully used to match the situa tions. Above all, it is the energy and versatility of th e young c a s t th a t makes this such an enter ta in in g evening. They play a stunning variety of instruments under, the direction of Howard Gay an d th e whole perfor mance is directed with pace by Kevin Shaw. PIPPAMUNRO
IF you have looked at Chilean wines at more than £6 a bottle, but have never quite pushed the boat out far enough, now is the ideal oppor tunity to do so because Errazuriz has brought its estate wines down by over £1.50 a bottle, for a limited period. Errazuriz Estate was
founded in 1870 when Don Maxiniano Errazuriz planted h is . first vineyards at Pan- quehue
in the
Aconcagua Valley, recognising that this valley, with its cool, rainy winters, hot, dry summers and moist Pacific Ocean breezes, was ideal for growing grapes. The finest clones were sent for from France and, with tenaci ty and perseverance, the founder transformed this barren land into a world class vineyard. GRRAZURIZ ESTATE
at £4.49 - we have four wines of the range which include a chardonnay and merlot - but I would like to particular-. ly recommend the 2002 SAUVIGNON BLANC. This wine has aromas of green apples and fresh pears, medium-bodied with lovely exotic fruit flavours and a nice clean finish that shows hints of grass and flint. The. perfect wine with grilled fish or as an aperitif.

YOU might think a talk and demonstra tion entitled “Buttercraft” is not a very exciting topic. However, if you pop along to Knowle Green Village • Hall on Wednesday you could be in for a surprise. - Well-known in his former village of Knowle Green, raconteur Mr Robert Kitching is a very entertaining speaker • who met Prince Charles when he recent ly visited Chipping, and will, no doubt, have something to say about that moment. Perhaps he will mention the royal visitor’s habit of fiddling with his cuff links? > The evening commences at 7-30 p.m.
