A WELL has been uncovered by builders working on a town centre site in Clitheroe. -A ground-floor extension at the rear of

Skipton Building society in Market Place is being built by Langshaw’s construction com pany, of Whalley, and, to reach the required level, a mechanical excavator was used to dig out a metre of concrete, brick, rubble and soil. During the excavation, the well was exposed by builders Mr Peter Finch and Mr

stone walled with limestone blocks. Mr Finch said: “It is about 25ft. deep to the water level, which fluctuates quite a hit. The water is deep, although I don’t know how far down it goes.” Contracts manager Mr Chris Haworth said

that it was a substantial construction and very soundly made. Its location has now been recorded by the

building society’s architect, Mr Richard Pear son, the opening sealed and capped with con crete, preserving it under the new extension. - Initially there was some mystery surround-

prominent feature. The suggestion made by Mr Philip Bailey, chairman of Clitheroe Civic Society, that it was a private well, has been supported by research conducted by two readers interested in the town’s history, and which has solved much of the mystery sur rounding the well’s past. The area was the site of the Boars Head

Inn, which traded from the 1830s to 1910 and a site map of 1867 shows the well close to the

as the Boars Head Tavern arid an even older map, a Lang’s 1766, shows the well’s location, though the tavern building is not marked. Clitheroe has several ancient wells, seven of

which appear on the maps mentioned, includ ing the Heild Well, which is an historical fea ture in Weligate. The dangers of open wells were recorded in

19th Century editions of the Clitheroe Adver tiser and the Clitheroe Times. One story relates how the Heild well “was

only partially surrounded by a low wall and was a source of danger to strangers". A woman walked into it, probably after dark,

ing the well, as Mr Pearson and Langshaw’s ' and was completely immersed, although she were unable to find any information about it from documentation. Mr Haworth expressed surprise that it was not mentioned in the archaeologist’s brief for the job and that nothing appeared to be known about such a

And a post mortem examination revealed absolutely no trace of the cancer that had orig inally threatened his life. . • Mr Life, (71), of Chadwicks Farm, Bolton- by-Bowland,- had been a heavy smoker but gave up when he developed chest pains when he was in his 50s; He was still working as a farmer until he was diagnosed as having lung cancer in March. • ■ .

meter of body surface and Mr Life had been given 36 milligramms per square metre.

( ! Pathologist Dr Richard Prescott said the cause of death was bronchopneumonia and intertestitiat pneumonitis caused by chemotherapeutic agents. He said mitomycin is given quite regularly as part of chemothera py treatment and that mitomycin lung is a rare but recognised side effect of its use. The inquest heard that Mr-Life, whose wife,

Sheila, was represented by their son, Alan, was transferred from Airedale Hospital to Clitheroe Community Hospital on December 12 but died the following day. Deputy coroner Carolyn Singleton recorded

a verdict that Mr Life died from a recognised complication of essential medical intervention.
