Palace plays host to a cracking show

THERE is escape for no one in the, latest production of the American hit

musical “Chicago” a t the Palace The atre, Manchester. \

■: .Even the musical director and the ; orchestra play a larger-than-usual part in the action.

, ■

'v Garth.Hall has to find an America accent and some acting ability to help the'cast tell the tragi-comic story of

■ Roxie Hart and how, with the help of ? a sharplawyer, she avoidsa, conviction for murdering her lover. The slick musical was aided by the appearance of Marti Pellow, former

lead singer of “Wet, Wet, Wet”. I t was easy to see why his performances in the show in London were met with this thing they call “critical acclaim” and why he had been asked to travel the Atlantic and recreate the role on ■Broadway. Emma Clifford as Roxie Hart - “I

lived longer than I meant to ” - and Lisa Donmall as her partn'er-in-crime Velma Kelly gave energetic perfor mances in a show which heaped little credit on American society and its legal system in particular. There were outstanding contribu

tions from Morgan Crowley and Mar tin Callaghan. Morgan gave a new dimension to the p a r t of newspaper columnist Mary Sunshine and Mar tin, as the wronged husband Amos Hart, really did have people believing he was “Mr Cellophane” and nobody knew his name. Two weeks ago I had seen the film

version of the show.Being able, now, to compare the two, I believe it is safe to say that-Hollywood has made no improvements in “Chicago”.
