all coriipeting in the Under 14s epee event in the Lancashire Schools’ Fencing Championships at Arnold School in Blackpool. Louise made a strong start to her defence of

the title by coming through the pool stages as the leading girl competitor. . Samantha also qualified automatically for the

quarter-finals, but Elizabeth had to fence again for the right to claim a place in the last eight.

. That was another bout she won, but then the draw jras stacked against the three local girls. In the quarter-finals the sisters were pitched

against each other with Elizabeth doing well to claimll points on her way to a 15-11 defeat. Samantha also won her quarter-final, but that:

put her up against her club-mate and reign- ingchampion. ,.

. A close battle unfolded in that semi-final with Samantha eventually scoring a narrow 15-13 win to go into the final. • : There she met Sophie Ridsdale of Durham and

again claimed a narrow victory as she took the title on the back of a 15-14 win. '

Exciting clash

Wolves Blues Under 9s . . . . . 2 Wolves Reds Under 9 s ------.2

- (Reds won 6-5 on penalties) AS you would expect from an all Clitheroe Wolves-final, this was an exciting and hard-fought game, which was only finally

. decided on penalties. The Blues got off to the best

possible start with Dane Meyler scoring inside the first minute. The Reds soon equalised

through a goalmouth scramble. The Blues regained the lead

with the best move of the match - Rory. Thompson hit a long ball to

Jordan Burridge who crossed for Meyler to score his second. The Reds levelled again

through a fine strike from Michael Clarkson. The game finished 2-2 after nor

mal time and extra-time saw the Blues defend resolutely against constant Reds pressure. The penalty shoot out that fol

lowed was decided 6-5 in the Reds favour.

Great display

OVER the weekend the Wolves Under 12s girls were invited to take part in the LFA tourna ment held a t Leyland. In a league which included

Morcambe, Darwen, Brierfield Celtic, Borrowdale United - who they heat - and with creditable draws against Preston North End

, and Bolton Wanderers, the girls won their section only conceding one goal. In the semi-finals they were

drawn against tournament favourites Darwen Ladies and put up a great performance with keep er Bronte Box Morten in inspired form. But with the scores locked at 0 -

0 Darwen scored with the last kick of the game and went on to win the competition. Players of the tournament were

Bronte Box Morten, Chelsea Crook and Karen Hanson.

' The Legion Two team' were staring

defeat in the face in the final of the Lancashire Small Table 10-Red Knockout. Up against the Falcon One team

from Poulton-le-Fylde in a best-of- seven frames final, they were 3-0 down and trailing badly in the fourth frame. But then came the exciting fight-

back at the Claremont Conservative Club in Blackpool which saw them take the title that has been won in the past by the Legion One team from Clitheroe. Matt Gamer was first to the table

but lost 92-34 to Falcon’s Paul Blake. Graham Blackburn played a close frame ag airisi John;Davidson but

take snooker crown

eventually lost 60-53 and things got even:worseifor Legion as Darren Chamley.was beaten 71-30 by Steve Beaumont. I ty looked like being a short night

out for the Legion as Tony Poxon rat- - tied in a 39-break against Peter Clare to lead 39-0. But Clare battled back bravely to

win 70-64 and keep Legion’s hopes alive. Simon Thompson clawed another frame back for the locals as he beat

.Simon Duddle 70-46 and then Stuart Blackburn had things very much his own way to beat Robbie Thornton 84- 42 and level matters.1 That leftJRik Avery the chance to

take the title for the Legion and he held his nerve well to beat Gary Mars- den 62-51 and see the trophy return to the Ribble Valley.

IN a highly-charged Craven Cup Final replay, it was Rimington who finally came out on top in a physical and high tempo encounter. Skipton made their intentions clear from the start

as O'Neill was hacked down in the first 30 seconds. Will Rimmington almostscored-early-on as the_ ball fell to him just inside the box but his goalbound

; effort was blocked by the keepers legs. David Cook's 30-yarder was also thwarted as the

sides remained even going into the second half. - Rimington-upped the pace after the break and it

i was onlyja matter of time before they made the breakthrough. I t came when Martin Lawson headed back across

goal for Aamir Zulphi to get the final touch and bun dle the ball home. Craig Barnes did an excellent job of keeping Skip-

ton's danger man quiet which resulting in Cook pressing forward and ultimately scoring the goal of thegame. Breaking from the halfway line he played a one-

two with Zulphi on the edge of the area before skip ping past the last defender and smashing the ball ' home past the despairing keeper to seal victory.

United miss out in four finals

WITH four cup finals this week, Readstone United were looking to end the season with a bit of silverware. But unfortunately,

they came out on the los ing end of four close encounters with teams they probably should have beaten. The Under 8s had the

hardest?task as they came up against Ful- legde Colts and eventu ally lost the match 5-2. Michael ; Pox and

Matthew Shirtcliffe scored the goals but injuries to two key play ers resulted in a change of tactics midway through. The Under 10s were

very unlucky to lose by the odd goal in their North Valley League Cup final dash with Bar rowford Celtic. The Red Rose Cup

final saw the Under 17s also come out on the wrong end of a 1-0 score line, this time against Old Blacks despite con stant pressure through out the second half. Great Harwood scored

two goals in the opening ten minutes of the Under, 11 Consolation Cup final from which Readstone never recovered. A fine header from

Neil Kissock just before the break turned out to be little more than con solation as the locals eventually ran out on the wrong end of a 2-1 score- line. After the girls' cup

success the previous week, they played Bum- ley Girls and made their illustrious opponents fight all the way. ■ Louise Molloy scored

Readstone's goal in a deserved 1-1 draw. - -
