THIS week I thought I would look at the bar gains to be had in the supermarkets this week. Starting with Booths,
the best deal around by far is'their CHAMPAGNE AUBERT, at £15.99, on offer at buy one, get one free, taking the price down to £8 a bottle. • This is a pleasant soft,

20% off any North or South American wines. My sources tell me some are being sold under cost price, with advertising budgets making up the difference. My choices would be:
FETZER SYRAH ROSE - serious rose with body and flavour, down to £4.79 from £5.99, or the every good, chunky and fruity ARGENTOMAL- BEC at £3.97 down from £4.97. The dense black cherry

and plum fruit of the ERRAZURIZ MERLOT, wrapped in a velvety oak cloak at just over £5 - this would be a £6.49 wine - is worth every penny. • Looking at Sainsburys,
there was not much to get over-excited about, except that there is a bin end on SPICE ROUTE PINO-
TAGE, taking this down from £7.99 to £5.99 and they just don't make any poor wines. This is elegant and opulent with hints of dried figs, on a chocoiatey background, again enhanced by a little oak, around 25% has been treated to new American oak for added interest. That should keep you
going for a while, as they say, while stocks last.
Y E T again I must thank the Royal Exchange for intro ducing me to the work of a playwright
I didn't know well. David Mamet is
probably best known for his Pulitzer prizewinning "Glengar ry Glen Ross", which has been filmed so suc cessfully, and I was amazed to read in the programme credits of his extensive film scriptwriting triumphs. ' “American Buffalo” is
a stunning play with some of the most incredi ble dialogue I have heard in the theatre for a long time. Some may carp at the
bad language, but it is so totally integrated and , appropriate that i t is good! f t is difficult to try to
give any kind of explana tion to the plot. ' The proprietor of a
junk store plans to retrieve a possibly valu able coin, a Buffalo Head nickel, with the help of his friend and young assistant, but the events are secondary to the
relationships
between the three and the conversations they exchange. On leaving the the
atre, my friend and I , when we found ourselves capable of speech, cau tiously suggested that Mamet is like an Ameri can Pinter, so I was grat ified when I later read the excellent programme notes mostly by John Lahr, that Mamet has read Pinter's works and has been inspired by them. Mamet has a similar
ability to use the rhythms and repetitions of everyday speech to such telling effect. Mike McShane is
wonderfully expressive as Donny the shopowner and he is superbly sup ported by Ben Keaton as an edgy, volatile Teach. Paul Popplewell is total ly believable as the young Bobby and Greg Hersov's direction is, as always, masterly. But this is a play to be
savoured in fine writing. I shall hurry to see any thing by David Mamet in future.
