Whalley steps back in time for jubilee parties

AT least three celebrations will mark the Queen's Gold­


en Jubilee in Whalley. •. "A ’relaxed afternoon o f fun


and celebration for the village" is planned by the parish church on the school's playing field for Monday afternoon, June 3rd. It will start with an ecumenical


service at 12-30 p. m. and will go on to a traditional-style after­


noon. People are invited to attend in


1950s picnic-suitable dress, bring­ ing their own food and drink, although there will be a licensed bar. A special prize is offered for a past or present royalty-style out­ fit.

Sun shines on ramblers


IT was sunshine all the way for Clitheroe Ram­ blers on Whitbarrow Scar on Saturday. Whitbarrow in the southern Lake District is a


series of limestone escarpments, three and a half miles long, rising to just 700ft. above sea level, affording 360 degree views of the Howgills, Lake­ land hills and Morecambe Bay sands. The walk started from Mill Side and it took'


less than half an hour's climb through Buck- house Wood before the party reached the open fell. Leader Mrs Gillian Morpeth headed north­ west along the full length of the scar towards the imposing summits of the Cumbrian hills. The arrival of spring was confirmed as the


walkers listened to a cuckoo in Hervey Nature Reserve. The group paused again at Lord's Seat, a cairn on the ridge path, to identify distant peaks. A mile on, a grassy dell provided a shel­ tered spot for picnic lunches. It was then less than half a mile until the ramblers descended to a bridleway around the northern end of the scar. Here they turned west and dropped to the


green fields of the Winster Valley. Their route took them, via Bowland Bridge, where they star­ tled a deer, through Swallow-Mire, over the River Winster by footbridge and into Cowdose Wood. An ocean of bluebells, highlighted by sunlight,


prompted a photography session, on the way to Pool Bank. More woodland followed, past With- erslack Hall and through the hamlet of Beck Head, back to Mill Side and their waiting cars. Rite Richards has planned a route from Chip­

Clitheroe hiked their way from Blackpool to Scar­ borough, a coast-to-coast journey of 145 miles, with just one overnight stop en route. Sponsorship money was boosted by a donation


from the company and presented to the local branch of Arthritis Care. ■ A marathon charity ride has been organised by a


group from the firm every year since 1993, including one from Land's End to John o'Groats and three oth­ ers from coast to coast. They have raised a total of £21,000 for charity. Mr Eamon Boyle, one of the ride organisers, said:
