The car is now very stiffly sprung, making typical British B-road dri­ ving the stuff of keen concentration. The steering is not as sharp as it ^


could be, but it feels like a car that is up for some fun. Exploit the balance of the mid-


engined chassis and lean on the tyres,


relishing the sheer lateral grip the TF135 is capable of generating. Straight line speed is respectable, with a sprint to 60 m.p.h. detaining you for 8.3 seconds on the way to a top speed of 127 m.p.h. I t is the sheer verve of the car that


takes some beating. For those who have spent time in the old MGF, the


TF135 will be an utter revelation. There is still the same slight rubberi- ness to its controls, but i f nonetheless has a seemingly huge capacity to entertain. The rigid steel bodyshell helps here too as well as creating one • of the safest cars in the class. The MGTF135 is not perfect. Too


many of the old MGF’s characteris­ tics have been carried over to make it an unqualified success. I t is, however, far better than


expected, better than most of the opposition and rattling good fun. MG has been at this game since 1953. You can be the beneficiary from just £17,245.
