A memorable day out for local naturalists

TWENTY-ONE members of Clitheroe Naturalists set 'off in per

fect weather!to explore the! unique coastal area around Silverdale.; Led by Christine Washbrook and

Cynthia Lairig, the group walked northwards to the cove from the vil lage, with splendid views across More- cambe Bay to .Grange and the Lake land hills. Changes to the course of the River Kent have led to the'rapid dis appearance of the'springy green turf : of thesaltmarshesi'

b From the cove, the way followed'

narrow ginnels to the church with well-tended gardens and vegetable

plots en route. A limestone escarpment and woods brought the naturalists to

Woodwell. Water, its source Warton Crag, seeped through the cliffs into old stone troughs and in former times sup plied water to Silverdale and was also used by drovers. From Lindeth Lane, the coastal areas of Jack' Scout and Jenny Brown's

Point gave’the group opportunities to study the bird and plant life.' ■

This is part of the district designat

ed as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty under the control o f the National Trust. Here were banks of colour—violets,

germander, speedwell, cowslips and a profusion of early purple orchids. As the tide receded, it was possible

to see the extensive changes; every tide cutting into the turf and deepening and extending the channels. Twenty-six birds were spotted, including a buzzard being chased by a •plover. •

; Canada geese, swans, shelduck and

oystercatchers are present in great numbers. Among 56 species of flowers were

milk-wort eyebright and carpets of bluebells in the woods, while orange tip, brimstone, green-veined ivy and Scotch argos were butterflies noted on the walk. On May 25th at 9-30 a.m.,

Clitheroe Interchange will be the starting point forjdie next walk to AncfunpV
