Hard-hitting Australian signs for Clitheroe CC

By CHRIS BODEN

BIG-HITTING Australian Shawn Fle- gler will be Clitheroe Cricket Club's pro fessional for the forthcoming Jennings

Ribblesdale League season. The 27-year-old is no stranger to the area after spending two seasons in the Lancashire

League with Lowerhouse. The all-rounder made several appearances

for Victoria after moving from Queensland, and last December played against England. He has also represented the state against South Australia, New South Wales and Tas

mania twice. Flegler, a left-hand batsman and off-spinner,

will replace Jonathan Fielding, who after four years at Chatbum Road, has moved to Wal-

shaw. Clitheroe chairman John Coulter com

mented; "I think we have done very well in

signing a player of his undoubted ability. Flegler had a huge impact at Lowerhouse,

where his infectious enthusiasm nibbed off on

the whole club. And local cricket fans will anticipate a ver

itable run-feat from the amiable Aussie. He cracked 962 for Lowerhouse at an aver

age of over 45 in his first season, while taking 74 wickets at 18.96.

By his own admission, he disappointed in .

his second season, but the smaller grounds in the Ribblesdale League should be very much

to his liking. Meanwhile, Clitheroe have home draws in

both the Abbot Ale and LCB knockouts. Lytham are the visitors on April 25th in

the Abbot Ale Cup, and should Clitheroe win, they will then face either Leyland Daf or

Southport and Birkdale. Heaton travel to the Ribble Valley in the

LCB Cup on Sunday, May 16th, with the winners taking on Ormskirk or Netherfield. Clitheroe entertain Walshaw in a friendly on

Sunday, April 11th, and the seconds visit Ley- land on either the same date, or the day before.

Lancs cross country league. Wilkinson, going into the final race, trailed Mark

Aspinall from Rossendale Harriers by two points. The Clayton Harrier, however, finished the stronger coming in third only eight seconds behind the winner and

international runner Martin Amor. Aspinall, on the other hand struggled under the pressure

onto overall second place. Blackburn's Phil Hall finished in third position closely

followed by another Clayton Harrier Ian Greenwood. Wilkinson’s award for being the champion is a trip to

Mount Everest at the end of March where he will run the Everest Marathon.

Fleetwood 2nds .........41

Clilheroe..................... 16 STRENGTHENED by the inclusion of several first-team regulars, Fleet- wood second string proved too strong for valiant Clitheroe on Sat

urday. While they won more

than their fair share of set piece ball, it was in loose play that the men from Lit- tlemoor were found wanti

ng. With the late withdrawal

of Nick Hutchinson, Mick Stott made a rare but wel come appearance on the

wing. His spectacular tackling

along with the dynamic

running of centre Martin Briggs proved to be the

highlights for the backs. Otherwise the threequar-

ters were comprehensively outplayed by some robust, direct running from their leetwood counterparts. The forwards, once again,

dominated in the scrums, . pushing the opposing pack back yards at a time, with hooker Mike Wilyman stealing at least four Fleet- wood scrums. Nick Green, Martin

Wigley and back row Bob Wilkinson provided plenty of weight to each scrum mage. Unfortunatley, what-

Clitheroe gained in weight, they lost out in mobility in broken play. The first half was a close

affair with the lead Chang ing hands on three or four occasions. Three Malcolm Heanan

penalties, an exellent try by Declan O’Duffy pips the

Rugby S c e n e

now customary Heanan conversion all added togeth er to put Clitheroe 16-12 in front on the half-hour mark. A late try gave the lead

back to Fleetwood and the second half saw more of the

same. Clitheroe slowed dramat

ically, the first half effort too much to continue, and the home side ran away to record a convincing victory. In another tough fixture,

Clitheroe travel to face Broughton this weekend. Weekend Teams
