parked in Chaigley. The front near-side win

An afternoon of poetry

Council Planning and Development Committee approved the company's plan. The natural stone, slate roofed building will go on a derelict site, and reflect the type of construction in the area. It will have a conference

room as well as offices and storage space.

MEMBERS of Clitheroe’s Pendle Club were treated to an afternoon of poetry from Mrs Christine Thistlethwaite. Everyone enjoyed the

occasion as Mrs Thistleth waite made her poems come

Close game for chessmen

CLITHEROE "A" faced Hawks "B" in a home match in the North-East Lancashire Chess

League. Hawks have still not won in the league and should have

been easily beaten by Clitheroe. On board 1, Mr John Smith played his usual strong

game and put his opponent under relentless pressure, and quickly forced a win. On hoard 3, Brian Carr held steady, but was not able to press home and this game ended as a

draw.Mr Tim Cook developed an interesting position on board 5 and was able to force checkmate. This left Mr Brendan Brown on board 4 and Mr Eric Mansfield on board 2 still playing, and Clitheroe in need of half a point

for outright victory. Mr Brown was able to gain a draw by the relatively rare

means of repeating the position three times and this

secured the points for Clitheroe. The result should have finished up looking very com fortable for Clitheroe, hut unfortunately a mistake which cost a queen for nothing decided the board 2 game in favour of Hawks, and the result looked quite close at Clitheroe "A" 3 Hawks "B" 2.
