IT’S HERE. . . COMPUTERS FOR SCHOOLS STARTS

HERE are your first tokens in our fantastic Computers for Schools

contest.. Schools throughout East

Lancashire are bidding to col lect the most tokens to win one of THREE computers donated by 3B Systems, of

Market Street, Nelson. A number of tokens will be

published each week in this newspaper—and there will be special bonus token editions during the next six weeks. Readers are being asked to

collect the tokens, hand them in to your school and help col lect as many as possible in the following six weeks. Special token collection

sheets have already been given out to participating schools. The schools which collect the most tokens will win the hi-spec computers. And to make it as fair as

possible to all schools, the number of tokens collected will be divided by the number of pupils per school, so even the smallest village school has

Casino Royale proves a winner for two charity marathon runners

TWO charity marathon runners were in the money when they swopped their training gear for glamorous evening attire to host a Casino Royale at a local

and Alison Arnfied (pic tured) are in training for

the London Marathon - but the 26.2-mile race is not a big enough chal

lenge for them! Besides pounding the

streets in the capital, they aim to raise more than £10,000 for the Cancer Research Campaign in the build-up to the event. And the Casino Royale,

held in conjunction with the Stirk House Hotel, Gis- burn, proved the perfect

gamble. For it was a sell-out - 300

tickets were sold - and more than £7,000 was raised. There were gambling

tables with professional croupiers, horse racing, a cabaret act, karaoke, a char ity auction, complementary "funny" money for all gam blers and a hot and cold buf-

"It was a wonderful

evening and both of us were delighted with the support we received," said Alison. Samantha, of Mcllor

Brook, and Alison, of Lang- lio, are now hoping to attract substantial sponsorship for their efforts in the marathon in April. (M0299/1G/1)

j j a l l j n t o c e n t r e for community

THERE are moves afoot by Clitheroe’s Trinity Centre to develop the town’s civic hall as a new

community asset. In th e ir new role as a

development trust, trustees have launched a feasibility study, which will examine the flagging hall’s potential for being transformed into a su s ta in ab le community

asset. A Civic Hall working

group has been set up, com prised of officers from Rib ble Valley Borough Council, four Trinity trustees, devel opment officers from Lan cashire Co-operative Devel opment Agency and Com munity Technical Aid Lan cashire. Together they will all work with Trinity Cen tre's own Project Develop

ment Team. The working group will

look a t the possibility of developing the building on an economically-sound

basis, possibly incorporat ing a cinema and arts orien

tated projects. The group has already

held two meetings and will be seeking to timetable in a period of public consulta tion on future development

of the Civic Hall from April

onwards. I t is hoped th a t grants

from public, priv a te and charitable sources will be made available to the group and th a t groups and busi nesses will contribute to the costs of th e fe a s ibil ity study, which T r in i ty trustees say is "an invest ment in the future" th a t could well create new job opportunities in the Ribble

Valley. Trinity has more than 36

years' experience working with local community groups and young people. As well as providing facili ties for young people over the years, it has developed Ribble Valley Community T ra n sp o r t P ro je c t, the Activate drug awareness group, the Jigsaw projects for disabled people and Clitheroe Out of School Club. In addition, it sup ports the Skill Share and Castle Supported Housing nroiects.

stipendiary magistrate Mr Jo n ath o n Finestein, who said i t was a most tragic

one. He told the defendant:

"You were ou t with your friends and it is not suggest ed th a t there was any pro longed period of bad dri

I ving on your p a r t . You over-steered and your inex perience caused this terrible

tragedy. "I have no doubt that the

impact of this incident will be with you for the rest of your life. The grief that you mus t be feeling and the grief and intense distress th a t th e re la tiv e s of th e deceased must be feeling is very difficult to put behind

the court's p en a lty must reflect the offence commit ted, although members of the public often viewed this approach with alarm.
