Currently being pro
moted as the "Gateway to the Ribble Valley", Lon gridge can look forward to an influx of new visitors and an end to the exodus of local shoppers heading off to Preston and Black burn for their weekly one-
stop shop. Already, after just over
one week of being open, Safeway is constantly packed full of inquisitive shoppers, who will no doubt return again and again to their "local" supermarket. Although it is unusual for
people go to Preston, they don't just do their food shopping, they buy clothes, or a TV, or they book their holidays. Hopefully now they will stay and do all these things in Longridge. "Safeway will have an
immediate impact on the town, but I think people
will also stay loyal to their
local corner shop." As the main shopping and social location for near
by villages, Longridge, situ ated at the heart of the undulating Lancashire hills, is also a well-established market town, with an inter esting mixture of shops in the town's main street, Berry Lane. There is every thing from high-class jew ellery to exclusive ladies’ shoes and fashions; from hardware shops selling kitchen and bathroom items to cake shops and pet shops. At the far end of Lon
gridge are Derby Road and Inglewhite Road, where
more shops congregate to offer the visitor even more variety and competitive prices to match those of a larger town. Longridge prides itself on
its small-town atmosphere, where personal service and the will to please are a pre mium. The town's traders are second to none when it comes to pleasant, efficient and quality service and those who travel from near and far to the town often comment on the friendly atmosphere that meets
them. And with market days on
Thursdays and Bank Holi days and a selection of top class eateries, Longridge certainly has something for everyone.

Longridge councillor David Smith is convinced Safeway will bring new trade to the already existing established shops in the town, but, he says, the major factor will be encouraging people from
