FEW comparable towns in the British Isles offer as good a range and quality of retail ser
vice to the public as Clitheroe. It's a proud and easily proved claim, and one that goes back many
| decades. In fact, some shops still locally
owned have been in business for a

Cement, equally prominent at the other, are reminders of just what a varied place Clitheroe is.
□ BARELY more than a quick
walkabout shows how this is vividly reflected in the huge variety of goods and services on offer - many within a comparatively small area. The town is also well served by
offices and shops of various profes sions and trades such as the law, accountancy, surveying, property
sales and travel. When it comes to courtesy, there is
no other place for miles where nearly all shop staff count change out loud into the customer's hand. It's a small point maybe - but a
telling one in these days of sinking standards in many bigger places which think they are superior!
□ CLITI-IEROE'S shops all have
the same standards of service, but time has naturally changed the
face of some. It's quite fascinating to encounter
a door sneck worn bowl-shaped by thousands of thumbs over the years! On the other hand, some shops have re-fitted and are as modern as any found in city shopping malls. Looking round, however, it's clear
that the wholesale demolition and glass, steel and concrete re-building of many other town centres, however good an idea it seemed at the time, was a mistake.

□ CLITHEROE is a classic exam
ple of the few places which escaped this sad fate, limiting itself to a neat re-development of the auction mart site to provide a picturesque and yet very functional open market. It complements the facilities offered by the rest of the town and everyone knows their own future depends, at the end of the day, on their success in serving the commu
