Judge Ian Webster, who has since been ill and may not sit again. The task of sentencing McDonald, whose vic tim was the daughter of a Ribble Valley guest house owner, has now fallen on Judge Ray mond Bennett. After hearing the case
Judge Bennett told
McDonald: "I would like to think about it. I want to do what is right for you, for the family and for the
general public.' McDonald, of Gladstone
Street, Harrogate, was given further bail. Mr Roger Green, prose
cuting, told the court that McDonald befriended the child after staying as a pay ing guest at her home. The girl got into bed with McDonald and the offences occurred after "cuddling and tickling". She told McDonald to stop, but he would not listen to her. The victim, who said she

that he had been a comput er scientist and claimed her mother and then the girl went into the bedroom. Bernadette Baxter,
defending, said McDonald still maintained his lack of guilt. A probation report stated he was in a state of denial and would not address the offending. The offences were at the lower end of the scale of their
type. McDonald's behaviour
had been inappropriate, but this sort of situation would not happen again. McDon ald was now on the sex offenders' register and that afforded a great deal of pro tection to the public. She claimed that custody
had liked McDonald, said his hands were once freezing and another time boiling. Mr Green said McDon ald told the girl's family
