FAMILY names dominate the Clitheroe streetscapes. Many of the shops in the
centre and the surrounding streets have been in the ownership of
the same family for decades. For some, the tradition goes back
even longer, with customer service paramount for more than a century. The name Ribble Valley has
become synonymous with quality, ser vice, good food and fine independent
retailers. Small is beautiful and without a
doubt, the Ribble Valley has its own special charm, with many of its visi tors savouring their visits months, if not years, later as deliveries arrive at homes throughout the country via our shops specialising in mail order.

It is five years since Clitheroe was
placed in the top 10 towns in the country for specialist shops. I t ranked among names like
Cirencester, Ilkley, Norwich, Penrith, Totnes, St Andrews, Barnstaple, Abergavenny and Marlborough. The Times magazine corresponent
Fiona Beckett said she felt like giving the town three cheers. "It is a good food town and people should count themselves lucky that they have such high quality shops in Clitheroe." I t may be five years later, but we
certainly feel that if The Times was to return, its correspondent would not be disappointed. If anything, Clitheroe now features even more interesting quality shops.
_ H p . l i m e s The Clitheroe Advertiser & Times tons first produced in 1S85 by Mr. /. Cowgill,
having merged zoith Us chief local rival in 1920. It remained in the hands of the Cowgill family until 1963, when purchased by UPN. The newspaper was then published from the premises of the company s former Blackburn Weekly newspaper centre, the Blackburn Times, until 1972
when production was transferred to Burnley.
