Walk in honour of a preacher
THIRTEEN members of Clitheroe Ramblers met at Jumbles Country Park to walk "The Roger Worthing ton Round". Led by Mr John Barker,
they climbed the hill to Affetside village where they admired the Millennium development around the
"Old Cross".' - They then proceeded to
Hawkshaw village and across the Army training grounds below Holcombe Moor where they had lunch. The group spent some time at the graveside of Roger Worthington, a lay preacher who died in 1709, before descending the moors to Edgworth. After a short break at the Brown- low Institute the group fol lowed the river and reser voir back to the Jumbles. The day was warm and

Lecturer bids a fond
farewell to naturalists NATURALIST and photographer Mike Berry gave a farewell lecture at a meeting of
Clitheroe Naturalists. A lecturer for 29 years, he
explained that it was his last, as he was going to con centrate on other aspects of
his work. The audience was treated
to an evening of superb visual images from Lan cashire's diverse landscapes
and habitats. Mr Berry opened his lec
ture at Clitheroe Library with a kaleidoscope of pic tures, ranging from sheep on Pendle to Barlick and Wycoller, and then concen trated on particular areas: woodland, farmland, moor land mountain streams, coastal areas and uplands. He pointed out that in
treecreepers. A badger, who would eat almost anything, appeared from his sett. The audience heard an unusual recording of the chirping sound made by this crea ture. A fox used the same opening for his lair, but with a separate passage inside. On farm land, the system
of silage production had meant that the lapwing was declining because of lost nesting sites, he said. The kestrel was the only bird that hovered. He showed a succession of five chicks in a treetop nest taken from a tower-like "hide" 90ft. above. There was a magnifi cent picture of a barn owl with wings spread, entering a barn to feed its offspring. There were many more
woodlands the disappear ance of red squirrels had been caused by disease, and efforts had been made to reintroduce them, but not always successfully. In the woods there were
beautiful slides and skilful effects used to illustrate his
themes. Mr Berry was thanked
by member Norman Berry, who expressed how much his work would be missed. The next lecture, which is
