Title rivals blocking route to Wembley

By CHRIS BODEN

Carlsberg Vase after Sat urday's third round clash at title rivals Newcastle

C

Town. Although Vauxhall

Motors - Saturday's con querors in the League Chal lenge Cup - are top of the league,-the Staffordshire side j are considered favourites for the champi onship. ' So Blues boss Steve

Parry couldn't have picked a much tougher tie to progress in a competition that will always stir memo ries of the fabulous 1996 run to Wembley.

But Clitheroe tend to be '

at their best on the big occasion, and will hope to make use of the wide open spaces at the Lyme Valley Parkway Stadium.

LITHEROE look to end the millenni um still in the FA

The sides haven't met

this term, although Parry has seen Town on a number of occasions and feels the Blues are more than capa ble of stamping their authority on the game with their brand of passing foot

ball. The dangerman is likely

to be l^goal Darren Twigg, but Clitheroe have scored goals from all over the pitch all season and will pose problems of their own for

the home side. And the games follow

thick and fast as the Blues open their defence of the Floodlit Trophy on Tues day night at Glossop North End in a second round tie. Clitheroe claimed the tro

phy - their first in 13 years - with a dramatic late goal from Dennis Hill against Kidsgrove Athletic at Maine Road, and will look to maintain their grip on it. Then next up is a game Clitheroe cannot afford to

lose - at home to Vauxhall on the following Saturday. Vauxhall, whom the

Blues beat in the league before crashing out of the cup, are seven points in front of Clitheroe, having played a game less, with Newcastle six behind the leaders with three games in

hand. 0 Wembley hero Chris

Grimshaw has returned to Clitheroe after helping out Bacup Borough in the Sec ond Division, while Parry has also snapped up two UniBond players in Bam- ber Bridge's Darren Davies and Chris Pollitt from Lan caster. O There are still seats left

on the coach travelling to Newcastle Town for Satur

day's FA Vase clash. The coach leaves Shaw-

bridge at 11-45 a.m., and price is £5. 0 The club's annual meet ing takes place tonight at Shawbridge, from 7-30 p.m.

Unbeaten run ends in League Cup

Vauxhall Motors 3 Clitheroe 1

THE Blue's slipped to a first defeat in nine games at table-topping Vauxhall on Saturday in the League Challenge Cup. 1 Two late goals knocked Clitheroe out after a fortuitous equaliser put Steve Parry's side back in the game. But although one possible route to

glory fell by the wayside,Parry will be glkd it wasn't league points the home sters'took off his side as they bid to kb£jf the pressure on. Parry's men couldn't stamp their

authority on the game as they have in recent weeks, and couldn't play the game at their tempo. Vauxhall looked solid and retained

their shape throughout, showing why they have ambitions of promotion. The home side went ahead midway

through the first half when the Blues failed to pick up Nick Young from a corner, and he applied the finishing

touch. ■ But Clitheroe made amends short

Centre half Lee Sculpher ventured forward and sent a cross over, which

beat a bemused keeper and flew into

the top corner. This stung Vauxhall, and the sec

ond half saw them piece together some incisive passing movements. But they failed to break Clitheroe

down until 20 minutes from time when Kris Richens.was beaten to the ball by Carl Nesbitt, who headed
