Clitheroe Advertiser and Times on th e council's decision to put the Civic Hall on the open market, I felt compelled to write a reply to show not all of us a t this newspaper share his views. Clearly the move was
F
made as a result of the party line being drawn and it has resulted in one of the most significant lost oppor- tunities to' the council I have encountered in two years of observing its usual ly carefully considered machinations. Councillors and council
officers in the Ribble Valley pride themselves on the authority's careful book keeping allowing them to invest in many council- backed projects benefiting

local people. This sentiment has been enshrined in the the recently approved cor porate plan, which commits the borough council to: "continue to improve the range and choice of leisure, cultural and recreational activities." Surely if a pro ject fitted these parame ters, it was the Trinity Partnership's plans for the Civic. In the organisation's thoroughly-researched and well-presented Business Development Plan for the building, we saw the vision for a truly innovative arts centre providing a spring board for the community into a vibrant range of cul tural activities spanning art-house and popular cine ma, theatre, music, visual

LABOUR is definitely back in the Ribble Val ley Borough Council

d o u b t, Coun. John McGowan is again a fully fledged, M il lb an k - endorsed p ar ty member, after years with the Liber-
als. He attends meetings of
Labour's local branch and. represents the party in the council chamber. So far there have been few if any calls for himtq seek re-elec;
tive popularity as a Govern; ment.

al cross. . Now: the Clitheroe
branch of the party is keen to move forward, publicis ing its meetings and invit1 ing quality speakers such as MPs and political writers.; Last night there was to be a
tion under his new- ticket, no doubt partly because the man.and his work, rather than party label have been the basis for voting him in. Naturally officials are
very pleased at the turn of events, which coincides neatly with Labour's rela
discussion about the high school 'entry con troversy
currently involving a good many familes in the Valley.; The branch meets abo^g
the Royal British Legion in Whalley Road, Clitheroe and is keen to add to its current 100-plus member
ship.
Yet more awards head for this first-rate village hostelry
1 various organisations visit the Ribble Valley every year? It must be a good few, judging from the number of awards which regularly

I arrive in the area. The Inn a t Whitewell,
■ pictured, is the current holder of several key hotel
I titles, including a national i one. Now two new dining awards go on the list, sug gesting plenty .of inspec tors a t the inn this year. The Good Pub Guide
2000 makes it the best din ing out pub in Lancashire while the 2000 Harden's Top UK Restaurants gives it an "exceptional" rating for cooking, putting it in the top 64 provincial venues | in the whole of Britain and
I compiled from the reports of 3,500 diners-out and is full of praise fo the "tradi tional and delicious nosh", some of the best pub cook ing in the UK. And the spe cial place is worth the trek, for its majestic setting with beautiful views. Naturally everyone at the Inn at Whitewell knows
Eire. Harden's is basically
1 the regular customers, but "passing trade" and visitors
to the area who walk through the door could just be inspectors. "We never give it a thought,” says a spokesman for the inn. Apparently it is a question of treating all customers as special and doing so keeps everyone busy enough. The awards seem to follow. I t is not known how many Lan cashire pubs were tested by the Good Food Guide, pub lished by a well-known national group. But clearly both awards are fur ther endowments of Ribble Val ley quality.

| one of us when there are so many people in the world, I point out that they are under rating the power and capability of God. Because our finite minds cannot grasp the power o£j
W iGod.

Because God is far too wonderful . ,, f ,
I for us to fully understand, we latch eagerly to Jesus Christ because He was a human being like ourselves. Because of finding it almost beyond our comprehension to even begin to understand how God can be all-, knowing, all-seeing and.ever-pre- | sent, we have to admit*jto a very
HEN I have been asked how God can possibly care for each
immature knowledge of Him. Jesus, with his eastern gift for imag
inable exaggeration, said that the hairs of our heads were all numbered, when confronted with such questions emphasising God's power to be beyond our thinking. He spoke of the market value of sparrows in His day,
. two for a farthing, or five for a penny. Probably his mother had impressed upon him the wisdom of buying in / bulk for the family food, as the price/ came easily to Ilis lips when I^c endeavoured to point out that not one of those tiny birds fell to the ground without God’s knowledge, because He cared for them. IIow much more He
- must value us! St Augustine is reputed to have
prayed: "O Thou who lovest each one of us ps though there was only one of us to love.” This underlines the truth some of ufe need to realise, that pur
heavenly Father cares for each indi vidual soul among us in a very special way. We count to God as His loved sons or daughters. No matter how many children a mother has, she cares for each one. This is an attribute given to her by God, reflecting His own love for us. Of course you matter to God, and
the sooner you realise this great truth, the sooner you will come to recognise the all-embracing love of God. Some day you may come to appreciate the fact that with so much caring love for us all, God always bears the hardest part in the world, hurt by the indiffer ence, apathy arid waywardness of his children. No matter'where we are, or who we are, or what we are doing, God is with each one of us at all times, car ing withTove. His love never lets us go. How can we ignore suich love?
Joe Stnhsfield Motor teaser is solved
AT last we are able to bring readers the answer to a question which has been puzzling a good many, judging from the response we have had. The car featured in this column three weeks ago
is a Jowett Long Four, according to an expert from Trawden, Mr Bill Barker. At least three people who actually remember the
vehicle have contacted us, and two told us it was a Jowett. But some younger folk thought it was an Alvis. Bean, Buick and Vulcan were among other
suggestions. Mr Barker, however, has photographic proof and
we are very grateful for his help. And for the inter est shown by readers, some well into their ninth
decadel v
arts, a cyber cafe and recording studios. Instead, it seems likely
that the tired diet of out dated films shown a t the existing cinema will contin ue to attract the same disr mal audience levels it does now. The whole farcical episode smacks of one side of the council wishing to make quick savings by making crude cuts in fund-
ing.However, could it also be
for political reasons - that Conservative councillors wished to close the public purse to subsidising the Civic Hall. Yet, I thought their party was supposed to support enterprise and innovation. The sad truth remains:
the public has been denied' hearing of their reasons for taking the course of action* that they did, as each one1 sat shamefully mute on a debate of enormous interest to citizens of the Ribble. Valley. So much for' accountability.
/ Aside from politicking'
though, how often do we*, hear of people complaining about the amount of drink-,' ing th a t goes on in the numerous licensed premises in Clitheroe? Yet what, alternative is there for a' night out in town? Judging by this chronic!-
act of narrow-minded', short-termism, investment; in the cultural well-being of the community is simply not regarded as the priority the worthy-sounding corpo-'. rate plan would suggest it.
