Government inspector blocks plumber’s plan for garage and store
HA GARAGE and store pFroom proposed by a <$Grindleton plumber (w-would effectively be in the -'I'Open countryside, says a .^Government inspector. An appeal by Mr P. Poole
fiinto Ribble Valley Borough f* Council's refusal of permis- tjj'sion for erection of the K building, and retention of a vhard standing, has been ^ turned down by inspector '.Mr Peter Walker. M r Poole wanted to use
inland opposite Greenfield liiCottages, Back Lane, V<Grindleton, for the building. (.••But in his report, the I'Ainspector says it would
detract from the appear ance and character of this part of the conservation area and impinge on the area of outstanding natural
beauty. Because the garage and
store would be used in con nection with M r Poole's plumbing business, it must be likely that the visual impact would be com pounded by the likely use for parking a van. The pro posal, said the inspector, was contrary to important policies aimed at severely limiting development in the countryside. The extra parking space it would pro vide was not a justification,
£2,000 worth of tools stolen

: The I-Iilti drills and other items were taken from the •back of a van parked in Whiteacre Lahe, Whalley, at - breakfast time. Police are investigating.

which are open to the public at various times of the year, have received grants for repairs and restoration. English Heritage has allo-
| cated a total of £90m. in grants over the past decade and its chairman, Sir Joce lyn Stevens, said the public had a right to see how their money was spent. "Until this year, owners
who have received grant aid were obliged to advertise their public access arrange ments. This year and in future years, we shall be doing this for them, as well as including the list on our
| website. "We chose Hudson's His
toric Houses and Gardens because it is the ideal medi um for such information | and it is widely available.
School plans get go-ahead
| TWO more Ribble Valley primary schools have been given planning permission- for building work. A t Pendle school in . Avenue,
Longsight
Clitheroe, a single-storey addition to provide a class room extension and a chair store has been approved. At St Leonard's, Langho,
an extension will form a new room for the headteacher, and there will also be inter nal alterations. Approval has been given
by officials of Ribble Valley Borough Council, acting
under their delegated pow ers.
