available space to tell the story, without the need for an explanation through a title. In the competition, judging by marks alone resulted in a multiple tie. Three of the top prints were by Derek Williams, with "Flight of Colour”, "Bracket Fungus" and "Ice Floral Suspension", these tied with John West's "Top Row". In fifth place was Ken Taylor's "Left Alone". New member Robin Haworth also entered some good pictures, well up to the standard of the competition. New member, Stephen
Robinson, jointly won the slide section with his land scape "Arncliffe Morning", although Eleanor Friend's "River Welland", Joan Whit taker's two slides "Prescrip tion Medicine” and "On top of the Globe", together with Mike Bartle's "Agngentrol" were all judged as equal. 0 Next week, Alan Ross

GPs from the Ribble Valley provide you with useful health advice . /
B E TW E E N now and Christmas* GPs from surgeries across the Ribble Valley will be producing a series of articles providing basic health advice. The following article about indiges
tion, vomiting and diarrhoea has been compiled by the Pendleside Medical Practice for the Ribblesdale Emer gency Medical Service. REMS, which is made up of GPs
from the Sabden and Whalley Med ical Group, the Slaidburn Medical Practice and Pendleside Medical Practice, as well as the Castle Medical Practice and the Railway View Med ical Practice, was launched three years ago to provide medical cover at times when local GP surgeries are nor
mally closed. To access medical care or advice at
any time, patients in the Ribble Val ley simply have to ring their usual surgery telephone number. If the surgery is closed, calls will be diverted either to the R EM S nurse up to 11 p.m., or to the duty GP through the
night. Local GP surgeries will be opening
at set times throughout the coming festive period in a bid to cope with the expected high demand, but in between cover will be provided by REMS. GP practices will be opening at the following times over the festive
period: Friday, December 24th - open until
5 p.m. Saturday, December 25th-closed.
Sunday, December 26th — closed. Monday, December 27th - open

eries — please try and use these prac tice-based surgeries if possible. Out side these times, all calls will be taken
by REMS. Indigestion
TH IS is common at Christmas as people tend to over-indulge in rich foods and/or alcohol. The stomach copes by producing extra acid which is used in the digestion of food and it is this over production which can cause the symptoms of indigestion. These range from heartburn — a burning sen sation in the lower chest, nausea, an acid taste in the mouth, bloating and stomach pains. Some medicines may also cause or aggravate the symp toms, such as ibuprofen and aspirin,
as does smoking. Self treatment: Antacids in medi
cine or tablet form, such as Rennies, help by neutralising the excess acid. Try' to recognise and avoid the foods which cause the symptoms and the wearing of tight-fitting clothes around
'
the-waist. If symptoms persist fori longer than seven days, or are very /severe, then please contact your GR Vomiting and diarrhoea
l_____<
TH IS can be caused by poorly- cooked, or inadequately reheated food. Excess alcohol, as well as riel and spicy foods, can also upset youi digestive system. It is common to fee unwell with a temperature anc headache. Paracetomol at the recom mended dose will help these symp toms. The vomiting, if present, usual ly settles after 24 hours, but the diar rhoea may persist for up to sever
days. Prevention and self-treatment
Thoroughly cook all foods and, i: reheating food, make sure it is piping hot. Keep high standards of hygiend such as washing your hands beford eating, preparing food or after going to the toilet, and drink plenty of non- sugary and non-alcoholic fluids.
