twinning schemes
CLITHEROE could be on the road to glory as Brit ain’s top twin town, fol lowing an invitation .from David Curry, Minister of State for Local Govern ment and Planning, to enter the prestigious 1993
Royal Mail International Twin Town Awards. The Royal Mail Interna
tional scheme is looking for the best examples of friendships and communi cation between communi ties in the UK and abroad. The idea is to bring people in d i f fe r e n t countries closer together. Town twinning began
after World War II to help rebuild relations between Britain and Germany T oday, o v e r 1,000 UK communities have links with twin towns in more than 50 countries and Brit ons send more mail abroad than any other European nation, some 050 million letters a year. Clitheroe Mayor Coun.
Howel Jones said: “This sounds like an excellent idea. Clitheroe twinned with It iv e sa lte s under Coun. John C ow g i l l in 1983.” T h e re are individual

Msm In total, 20 occupational therapists from Clith
croc Health Centre, Clitheroe Hospital and Black burn competed in the friendly game, which was

Mayor takes control
THE ghost of the old gas works on Kirkmoor Road has finally been laid to rest — as a new housing scheme at the site got a civic send-off. I t signalled the start of
work on a £1.7m. project to provide much-needed homes for the elderly. The scheme has been
10 years in the making and developers Housing
21, together with repre sentatives from the Rib- ble Valley Council and the Government’s Hous ing Corporation, cele brated by gathering for a turf-cutting ceremony. Ribble Valley Mayor
Coun. Tony Jackson, who took the controls of an excavator to launch the building work, said: “ It is a pleasure to see work commencing on this- site. Much hard work has gone into clearing and d econtaminating the area. I wish to congratu- l a t e e v e r y o n e
concerned.” The scheme, which
includes 39 fiats for rent and a two-person wheel chair unit, is expected to meet an urgent housing
need in the area. Coun. Jackson com
mented: “ The d e v e l opment shows the com mitment of the Ribble Valley Council to provid ing more homes for the elderly in Clitheroe.” Housing 21’s d e v e l
opm en t o f f ic e r , Mr Frank Barriskell, also expressed d el igh t.
He said: “The site is
ideal for meeting this type o f housing need, with a spectacular view of the greenbelt for resi dents to look at.” Work on the scheme is
j
expected to be complete by September o f next year.
Stage is set for memorable day in the country
IT is Chipping’s 67th annual agricultural show on Saturday and the stage is already set for another memorable day out in the country.
The show takes place on its permanent site on Lon-
gridge Road and president this year is Mr George Brewer, of Bleasdale.
The North West is home
to some o f the country’s best livestock and Chip ping Show will provide prime examples ol quality pedigree and commercial cattle and sheep.
The local hills are alive
with sheep and Chipping, with its backdrop of fells, will certainly see a large entry of the very best of our native breeds, along with those o f European origin which have passed the test of our discerning farmers.
The dedicated enthusi
asts who continue to spe cialise in heavy horses will be exhibiting and Shire horses which have taken major prizes at the county and other shows this sea son will be on display.
Other classes include
light horse and pony, poul try, dogs, horticulture, trade exhibits, musical interludes and, in the main ring, a spectacular team competition organised by loca l you n g fa rm e rs , d e s c r ib e d as a c ro ss between “ It’s a knockout” and an assault course, with proceeds generated going towards the coro nary care unit at the Royal Preston Hospital.
Care home owners fear
income loss R E S ID E N T IA L care home owners could lose between 10% and 50% of their income because of the new Community Care
Act. T h e A c t t r a n s fe r s
responsibility for nursing home places from local health authorities to Social Services departments. Social Services receives
funding directly from the Government, but it is feared that the future f undin g wi l l not be enough. Mr J e f f Robbins, o
Greenside, Chatburn — Clitheroe’s first residential home — has reduced the working hours of its staff for the first time ever. Greenside is registered
for 21 people, but at the moment houses only 13. Mr Robbins said: “ In the
last four months we have not had one referral of a resident eligible for local
authority funding." Nursing home critics
say nursing home owners should compensate any loss of income by provid ing essential services, such as meals-on-wheels, hum- dry and bathing, to the
elderly in their homes. But Mr Robbins dis
missed the suggestion, saying: “We do all these for nothing anyway.”
