FRENCH YEAR 1 BEGINNERS (WHALLEY, WEDNESDAY 7-15 p.m. and RIBBLESDALE TUESDAY 7 .1 5 p.m.)


COURSE CONTENT Students will learn to communicate in French in a variety of everyday situations e.g. finding the way, eating out, shopping,


travelling. The emphasis will be on speaking and on listening.


Students will be prepared tor Graded Tests I and 2 and could progress to RSA. YEAR 2 (RIBBLESDALE TUESDAY 7 .1 5 p.m.)


ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Basic knowledge of French or Graded T'est level I or I year’s study.


COURSE CONTENT Students will widen their ability to communicate in French in a variety of everyday situations e.g. securing accommodation, eating out, directions, illness. Emphasis will be on speaking and listening.


Students will be prepared for Graded Tests 2 and 3.


YEAR 3 /4 (WHALLEY WEDNESDAY 9-30 a.m.) YEAR 3 (RIBBLESDALE TUESDAY 7 .1 5 p.m.)


ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Levels 1, 2/3 Graded Tests would provide a useful background. Perhaps an 'O’ level taken some years ago, which needs 'brushing up'. A fairly wide vocabulary on various topics. At least one years previous study of French or French conversation.


COURSE CONTENT A large part of the course is orally based. There is a high content ol listening work, using tapes, visual aids, written exercises. Some grammar will be essential, although communication is the main


objective.


RSA 1 examination is optional — to be taken in May 1994 — Reading/Listening/Speaking examinations leading to RSA II or GCSE the year after. YEAR 4 (RIBBLESDALE TUESDAY 7 .1 5 p.m.)


ENTRY REQUIREMENTS A knowledge of French at least to Level 2 or 3 of the Graded Tests or a previous GCE/GCSE pass.


COURSE CONTENT Students will learn, through a wide variety of topics, to develop the ability to use French effectively. The emphasis will be on practical communication, furthering expertise in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Students will be prepared for the GCSE exami­ nation in May/June 1994.


YEAR 5 (RIBBLESDALE TUESDAY 7 .1 5 p.m.)


ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Students should have gained GCSE A-C Grade or old ‘O' Level GCE pass/or should be reasonably fluent in basic French.


To speak, listen, read and write in French at a level above that of GCSE French in a register appropriate to adults. Emphasis will be on the spoken word with recourse to books, newspa­ pers, tapes, video recordings. The course could lead to more advance linguistice attainment and prepare students to enter ‘A’ Level examination (or equivalent) should they so wish.


SPANISH YEAR 1 BEGINNERS (WHALLEY TUESDAY 9 .3 0 a.m. and RIBBLESDALE TUESDAY 7 .1 5 p.m.)


COURSE CONTENT To give complete beginners basic ‘survival’ skills in Spanish. You will learn to communicate by speaking and being able to understand Spanish in some of the situations in which a person visiting a Span­ ish speaking country may find him/herself.


PROGRESSION Students will be prepared for graded tests 1 and 2.


YEAR 2 (RIBBLESDALE THURSDAY 7 .1 5 p.m.)


ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Basic knowledge of Spanish or graded lest i.


COURSE CONTENT To learn to cope with everyday situations in Spanish, grammar terms will be introduced gradually only where needed, emphasis will be on developing speaking and listening skills.


PROGRESSION Students will be able to take graded test 2 and 3 and progress to further Spanish courses.


YEAR 3 (RIBBLESDALE WEDNESDAY 7 .1 5 p.m.) ENTRY REQUIREMENTS


Approximately 2 years study of Spanish - possibly levels 1 and 2 graded tests. COURSE CONTENT


Students will widen their ability to communicate in Spanish in a variety of everyday situations. Students will be prepared for the GCSE examination if they so wish.


TERM BY TERM CLASSES YEAR 2 (RIBBLESDALE WEDNESDAY 7 .1 5 p.m.)


ENTRY REQUIREMENT Approx. Level 2 Graded Tests i.e. ability to cope in basic situa­ tions in a German speaking country.


Students will learn to get by in more difficult situations while on holiday or business. The emphasis will be on conversation and listening skills.


PROGRESSION Students will be prepared for Graded Tests Level 3.


YEAR 3 (RIBBLESDALE WEDNESDAY 7 .1 5 p.m., YEAR 3 /4 WHALLEY TUESDAY 1 p.m.)


ENTRY REQUIREMENT Approx. 2 years German study — possibly levels 1 and 2 Graded Tests.


The course will lead in 2 years to GCSE. The skill areas of reading, listening, speaking and writing will be covered. Students will be encouraged to sit a 'mock' GCSE exam at Basic level at


the end of year 3 and the full GCSE exam at the end of Year 4.


TERM BY TERM CLASSES FRENCH INTERMEDIATE (WHALLEY MONDAY


9-30 a.m.)


For those with same knowledge of the language who wish to extend their communication skills in everyday situations in spoken and written french. HOLIDAY FRENCH


(PARISH CHURCH HALL, CLITHEROE, WEDNESDAY 1 0 .0 0 a.m. ST MARYS, LANGHO, THURSDAY 7 p.m.)


COURSE CONTENT Students will learn to communicate in French in a variety of every­ day holiday situations e.g. finding the way, securing accommoda­ tion, exchanging money etc. The emphasis will be on speaking and listening.


CONVERSATIONAL FRENCH


(COPY NOOK HOTEL, BOLTON BY BOWLAND, TUESDAY 7 .3 0 p.m.)


ENTRY REQUIREMENT Basic knowledge of French.


The student's ability in French will be raised through discussion. Accent and pronunciation will receive priority together with other communication skills. The course will be structured towards the needs of the students.


ADVANCED FRENCH CONVERSATION (WHALLEY, THURSDAY 9 .3 0 a.m.)


ENTRY REQUIREMENT Student should be reasonably fluent in spoken French


PROGRESSION Possibly AS level German. YEAR 4 (RIBBLESDALE, WEDNESDAY 7 .1 5 p.m.) A continuation of year 3 (GCSE) course, see above for details. YEAR 5 A/S (RIBBLESDALE THURSDAY 7 .1 5 p.m.)


ENTRY REQUIREMENT An ability to converse in German on a variety of topics, under­ stand written German and write continuous Gorman.


How to speak German with native speakers. Learning will be by participation in a variety of exercises, both written and spoken. Use will be made of videos, cassettes and a variety of modern magazines and newspapers.


PROGRESSION An A/S examination in German (half way between the old 'O'


level and 'A' Level)

COURSE CONTENT You will learn to communicate effectively in Italian, to understand simple instructions.


At the end of the course students will be able to take Graded Tests I and It.
