THE ART OF STICK DRESSING DECOUPAGE

as this course is suitable for complete beginners. Instruction in the basic principles of making both useful and decorative walking sticks and shepherd’s crooks. project. CRAFT PAINTING


FLOWER ARRANGING We offer a variety of flower arranging classes at the following


venues: (READ C of E SCHOOL, MONDAY 7 p.m. IRIS BALDWIN WADDINGTON METHODIST, TUESDAY 7-30 p.m. ANN MORRIS WHALLEY, THURSDAY 7.15 p.m. ANN KIRKMAN PENDLETON VILLAGE HALL, THURSDAY 7-30 p.m.)


Students will learn the basic skills required to construct a flower arrange­


ment taking care over choice of plant material. Various types of arrange­ ments e.g. table and hanging arrangements will be demonstrated and also the use of dried flowers. Experienced students will be able to improve and expand already acquired skills.


MATERIALS On week 1 students should bring small, round oasis, an oasis dish,


basket or small container, 1 bunch spray carnations or similar flowers and some greenery e.g. conifer, ivy etc. Oasis ribbon and, wire may be purchased Irom the tutor.


FLORAL CRAFT (ST MARYS, LANGHO THURSDAY 7 p.m.)


The course will cover use of various types ot plant material with emphasis on dried and preserved, plus occasional work with trosh and silk flowers. Some craft work will be involved e.g. topiary trees, bows. Students will learn through weekly demonstrations, discussion, observa­ tion and individual tuition.


MATERIALS Week 1 — basket, dried oasis, suitable size bunch of dried plant


material. Tutor will advise each week on purchase of suitable materials.

Learn the art of wiring flowers to make buttonholes, ladies corsages, bouquets, headdresses and much, much more.

FLOWERS AND CHRISTMAS


(WHALLEY, TUESDAY 1 p.m.) No previous knowledge or skill required just to ability to i scissors and a craft knife. Convert flat prints into 3 Dimensional pictures by cutting and glueing.


MACHINE KNITTING —


BEGINNERS (RIBBLESDALE MONDAY 7-15 p.m.)


ENTRY REQUIREMENT Preferably a knitting machine on which to practice techniques but this is also a basic course to find out what the machine can do. Students will learn basics of machine knitting by demonstration, discus­ sion and experimentation where possible.


MATERIALS None required for actual classes. Knitters may bring their own machines


if they want to but this is not essential.


POTTERY CRAFT (WHALLEY, TUESDAY 1-15 p.m. WHALLEY, TUESDAY 7-15 p.m. WHALLEY,THURSDAY 9-15 a.m. WHALLEY, THURSDAY 7-15 p.m.)


Artistic ability is not essential for learning basic methods but do not mind getting your hands covered with clay — it simply washes away with


water. Beginners will learn preparation of clay and basic techniques lor making


simple or useful shapes. Work may be fired for a reasonable cost. More advanced students will apply their basic knowledge to produce more interesting work by developing torm and decorative techniques.


MATERIALS Reference books, tool and brushes, potters' wheels, kiln and equipment are available for use during classes but the tutor will be pleased to advise for tools etc for use at home.


CRAFTS (CHATBURN C.E. SCHOOL, WEDNESDAY 7.30)


All levels of student will be welcomed and will learn basic and advanced mechanics of the craft using fresh flowers, foliage, silk and dried materials. Towards the end of the course, Christmas arrangements swags, crackers and gifts will be covered.


POTTERY PAINTING (WHALLEY, MONDAY 7-15 p.m.)


The course is suitable for both the beginner and the student with some experience in pottery painting. It is not necessary to have any know­ ledge of pottery painting but if a student is familiar with painting it will be


helpful. Students will team by ideas, demonstrations and discussions how to use natural forms and abstract designs in pottery painting.


MATERIALS Sable brushes, tile for mixing paint, palette knife, small pots tor oil and


turps. CHINA AND CERAMIC


PAINTING (SPIRITUALIST CHURCH, TUESDAY 1-30 p.m.)


This course is suitable for both the beginner and the student with some experience in pottery painting. It is not necessary to have any know­ ledge of pottery painting but if a student is familiar with painting it will be


helpful. Student will learn how to paint with onglaze enamels on china and porcelain.


If you already have some materials please bring them. If not the tutor will advise on week 1.

SHEET PEWTER/COPPERWORK (WHALLEY, TUESDAY 9-30 a.m.)


No previous knowledge required as the skills needed will soon be learnt. This course will teach you how to work sheet pewter/copper into useful craft items.


MATERIALS Most requirements can be obtained from tutor but phone 0254 249147 if new to this work.


PICTURE FRAMING (WHALLEY, WEDNESDAY 7-15 p.m.) No particular skills are required, but a creative and artistic eye with the ability to use a limited number ol hand tools would be an advantage. How to select, cut and assemble frame moulding, measure and cut overlay matters, stretch tapestries, mount prints and photographs and finally how to cut glass and assemble the complete trame. All required skills will be demonstrated by tutor, the student will then be expected to practice and assisted by tutor to complete the task.


MATERIALS Week 1, steel rule, cralt knife with replacement blades, pencil, eraser,


small carton ol wood glue, and a small photo or print to frame (about 10 x 12 max). For the rest ol the course, moulding, card, hardboards, glass and fittings will be required and are available from tutor or may be purchased from local DIY shops prior to class.


WOODCARVING AND HAND


MADE FURNITURE (WHALLEY, TUESDAY 9-30 a.m.) Students will learn how to use and handle carving tools correctly and with salety. sharpen the tools correctly and develop a feeling for the beauty of wood. The course will develop through demonstration and


practice.


MATERIALS A piece ol timber for practice and any wood carving tools you already


have. Tutor will advise on the purchase of tools.


WOODWORK (RIBBLESDALE, THURSDAY 7-15 p.m.) Although most of the course will be of a practical nature, some theory will be taught in a progressive way along with the skills. The student will be given tuition and guidance to construct and finish a project of their own choice.


MATERIALS Ideas of selected project (if any) in sketch form if possible. Pencil and paper.

CURTAINS AND COVERS (WHALLEY MONDAY 9-30 a.m.)

the patience to do it. Students will learn how to assess what is needed to restore a piece of furniture and how to use the various materials safely and cor- rectly.These different methods and processes will bo learnt by demon­ stration and practice.


MATERIALS Week 1 fine wire wool, white spirit or turps, meths and old cloths and piece of furniture to restore. For the course in general it is dependent on the piece the student brings. Materials such as french polish, danish oil, wax polish, raw linseed oil, stains and fillers but not until after assess­ ments have been made at the first meeting of the class.
