Module 1 concentrates mainly on non-literary material (ei) newspaper articles, advertisements) so as to increase understanding as well as to develop the ability to express opinions and intormation in writing. Module 2 otters stu­ dents the opportunity of appreciating a variety of literary texts (eg short stories, novels, autobiographies, poetry and plays).

This course introduces you to the wide variety of caring needs in the community from birth to old age. Childcare includes playgroups, day nurseries, community homes and adoption. The needs of the physi­


cally and mentally handicapped are discussed including the issue of ‘care in the community'. The problems of an ever increasing com­ munity allied to changing family relationships is tackled. This course is varied precisely to show the wide variety of issues that society faces.


PSYCHOLOGY (WHALLEY MONDAY 9 .3 0 a.m. RIBBLESDALE MONDAY 7 .1 5 p.m.)


The study of Psychology will give you a greater understanding of how human beings think and work. This unit is a fascinating intro­ duction to the study of behaviour. Come along and discuss: child development, learning, memory, perception, leadership, comfor- mity, personality and many other topics.


SOCIOLOGY (WHALLEY TUESDAY 9 .3 0 a.m.)


This course is a basic introduction to the subject matter and' the methods of sociology. Human societies and their main institutions will be examined as well as the family, educa­ tion, social inequality, welfare state, population and urbani­ sation.

ENGLISH LANGUAGE


This lively and interesting course gives you the opportunity to make a detailed and varied study of both English Language and Litera­ ture. The structure of language and how it works in society is exa­ mined together with a study of a selection of drama, poetry and novels from two of the most interesting periods of English Litera­ ture.


HISTORY (WHALLEY THURSDAY 1 p.m.)


This fascinating unit will develop an understanding of, andsflp* interest in, the concepts of totalitarianism in the twentieth century. After an introduction to communism, fascism and national socialism students will choose four modules from a total of six.


PSYCHOLOGY (WHALLEY TUESDAY 1 p.m. RIBBLESDALE WEDNESDAY 7 p.m.)


In this more advanced course you will have the opportunity to x develop an indepth knowledge of the fascinating world of Psycholgy. Students are provided with an insight into the main approaches to the study of Psychology and an appreciation of the concepts dealt with by each.


SOCIOLOGY (WHALLEY FRIDAY 9 p.m.)


This course will consider the origins and nature of the sul>\«^» ject, sociological perspectives, theoretical approaches and


methods used by sociologists. There will be opportunity for > an in-depth study of key topics from such as the family and kinship system, crime and deviance, education and schooling, work and organisation, religion, political behaviour, women's role in society, race relations and the media.

VICTORIAN ENGLAND


This lovely multi-disciplinary course will focus on three areas of study of the Victorian era; 1) Literature - a close examination of at least three novals from Victoria period and a selection of poems. 2) Victorian art and Architecture as an expression of the age will be studied. 3) Social and Cultural Themes - in this more general area of the course students will have the opportunity to follow up social, political or economic issues which effected Victorian life such as the effects of life in the new cities, the growth of the railways, the role of the monarchy, among others.

COURSE CONTENT The anatomy and physiology of man, with an emphasis on personal, social, envrionmental, economic and technological aspects of human biology. Man's relationship with other forms of life and the environment. Students will acquire skills and knowledge useful in the caring and nursing professions. PROGRESSION

ENTRY REQUIREMENT No formal qualifications, but a basic knowledge of geometry is an advantage. COURSE CONTENT Basic coastal navigation, meteorology, safety and seamanship for sailing and motor cruising. Course follows RYA National Syllabus. This will be learnt by lecture, demonstration, and group activity. The student does chartwork in the classroom with some work done at home. MATERIALS Navigation instruments and RYA course books. The books are ordered at the first class. (£35 approx) plus additional cost of any navigational instruments you may wish to purchase.
