For the last few years wallpapers have also been clawing their way back into favour, initially in the form of the feature wall only, but latterly moving towards all four walls being papered. The current new crop of papers cater for both these options, with some manufacturers offering slightly more muted papers to co-ordinate with new strong and bold designs, and others choosing to release a more subtle, or in some cases not so subtle, product suitable for the whole room. But here again, colour and design are to the fore. As always, Osborne & Little are front runners here. Their Empyrea collection of exquisite wallpapers and fabrics feature panoramic views, pictorial scenes and gardens, with exotic birds, foliage and flora – a Maximalist’s delight !!!


A good wallpaper can really set the mood in a room, or the tone for a whole house. For example, as I waxed lyrical about last month, a dining room can easily take a rich, dark paper with a large, bold design, as you probably won’t be in the room for long enough periods to get sick of it, and when you are it will usually be dark, so making the room feel a little heavier won’t be an issue. An impactful and carefully chosen paper in a hallway can say to your visitors “This is me, this is my style”. And if you fancy something quirky or unusual, what better place to really go to town than a cloakroom.


So come on folks, let’s inject a bit of colour and pattern, a bit of richness and warmth, and frankly a bit of oomph into our homes. I think I’ll get a tee shirt printed saying something like “Maximalist & Proud”. Anybody fancy one ?
