SENSATIONAL SWEATERS DRESS DOWN, RELAX, REPEAT

A

Today the sweater is one of the most common wardrobe items for both men and women, so it's perhaps surprising that the sweater has only been worn as fashion since the 1920s. A modern knitted garment is not just a thing to be dragged on for extra warmth but has, in its own right, a place in the world of fashion.

This month we look at some super sassy and stylish sweaters both dressy and casual to sport every day - with so many versions being used by designers to make statements that go beyond the need for warmth and comfort.

The first sweater can be linked back to the 'Guernsey', worn for warmth and protection. However, it soon began to have wider appeal, with participants in sporting activities such as golf, boating, tennis and cycling all adopting their own take on it.

Still as popular as ever, we have an updated take on the traditional Guernsey knit. This sweater, pictured left, from Barbour features a ribbed yoke and a contrasting striped body. Made of pure cotton, the jumper features a grown-on funnel neckline, full-length sleeves with ribbed cuffs, ribbed hem detailing and side vents. Team yours with denim for laid-back weekends.

Back now in vogue! The Prince of Wales first popularised the Fair Isle sweater when he wore one for his golfing, while the designer Coco Chanel promoted the knitted jersey as everyday ware. This month my favourite garment feature is Brora's much-loved wool Fair Isle tank. Each season they have one that morphs into a different design due to the complete change of colours. I adore the hues combined in this great little vest. Cosy in pure wool, wear simply with a white shirt and jeans for a unique patterned layer.
