MANUEL CANOVAS LET’S HEAR IT FOR THE MAXIMALISTS !!!
For too many years the minimalists told us that we needed to de-clutter, tidy up and live in sterile boxes instead of homes, where even a discarded newspaper or magazine would have disastrous effects on the chi of our environment, and ultimately cause the breakdown not only of our own lives, but of organised society as we know it.
This of course had far reaching consequences, and totally changed the way we thought about our interiors. Out went any pattern or rich colour in the room – even the budgerigar was worried. Sumptuous curtains were torn down and replaced with plain roman blinds. Carpets were uprooted and superseded by wood floors, and anything that remotely resembled wallpaper was hastily stripped off and consigned to the nearest skip. Paint was king, as long as it was in a neutral shade of grey of course.
Well, I’m pleased to say that this is no longer the case. If we’ve learnt anything about our surroundings in the last 18 months, it’s that life just isn’t like that, and it’s not desirable to live in a home where you’re made to feel that if you want to kick off your shoes and lounge on your sofa you have to put them away first or suffer guilt pangs all through Eastenders. Or is it that we’ve just got plain bored with blandness? Either way, the result is that colour and pattern are back, and not to the detriment of our calm smart rooms, but to compliment and enrich them.
As regular readers (sit up straight, both of you) will know, while manufacturers of fabric and wallpaper would normally release one collection in the spring followed by another in autumn, for obvious reasons this didn’t happen last year. However, many of this year’s releases are full of vibrant pattern and colour. Even manufacturers who for the last too many years to count have showered us with mind-numbingly endless variations on a plain grey fabric are now offering both texture and colour – wonderful sludgy blues and mellow greens among them.
The designers at Manuel Canovas have long been associated with bright, lively and captivating fabrics and wallpapers, and their current offerings, entitled Alba, Bali and Nara certainly don’t disappoint. Alba is a cornucopia of rich weaves and prints, ranging from striking botanicals to sumptuous ikats, bringing together some of their most iconic fabrics from past collections, along with some stunning new offerings. Bali is a delightful collection of washable – yes, you heard me right – polyester prints with a light-heated fishy, birdy and botanical theme, teamed up with 3 extremely jolly
