MENOPAUSE SKIN CARE GET YOUR GLOW BACK
With October’s World Menopause Month giving women across the world the chance to talk openly about this inevitable stage in a woman’s life, recognised symptoms such as hot flushes, mood swings, anxiety, lack of sleep, memory fog and increased weight have received much attention along with advice and techniques for improvements. The effects of menopause on skin, however are less high profile.

Dr Sarah Wright, menopause specialist and head of Wellness at Midlands award-winning Air Aesthetics Clinics believes that women don’t need to accept menopausal changes to the skin as “just an unavoidable symptom of getting old”. Proactively improving the condition and health of your skin and its appearance can help balance the negative effects of menopause on your self- confidence and general wellbeing at this time of great personal change.
HOW MENOPAUSE AFFECTS YOUR SKIN Menopause triggers significant hormonal changes, at the heart of which is a decline in oestrogen levels which compromises the skin’s collagen and elastin.
Collagen is the scaffolding that supports the structure of the skin resulting in loss of youthful volume and tightness. The drop in oestrogen levels can also result in a reduction of the supportive fat below the skin of the face, neck, hands, and arms, which leads to sagging and wrinkles.
Studies show that women's skin loses about 30% of its collagen during the first five years of menopause. After that, the decline is more gradual. Women then lose about 2% of their collagen every year for the next 20 years.
THE MOST COMMON SKIN CHANGES CAUSED BY MENOPAUSE
• Wrinkles, brown spots, jowls and dry skin may appear more pronounced as the skin ages, along with sagging and loss of plumpness
• Changes in skin pH and sporadic fluctuations in hormones levels can exacerbate existing skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, eczema and psoriasis
• Increased skin sensitivity, dryness, flaking and itching
• Skin that was previously balanced might start to get dry or oily patches.
•
The higher ratio of testosterone to oestrogen can cause coarser, darker and thicker facial hair to grow
• As the skin barrier becomes more fragile, there is a reduction in skin hydration, elasticity, and thickness.
SOLUTIONS TO BOOST YOUR MENOPAUSAL SKIN
“A skin care program that includes products with highly active ingredients that can deliver a significant boost to levels of hydration as well as re-energising collagen that has become dormant, can be incredibly helpful for managing menopausal skin,” says Dr Sarah Wright who recommends a dermatologist created program of ZO skincare products and HydraFacialTM:
