DE S IGN CENTRE

VERITY COLEMAN

Rascal & Roses founder Verity Coleman set up her studio in 2012 while on maternity leave from her role as an army officer. Now based in Herefordshire and with a team of five, she works all over the south of England and abroad. She is also a member of the BIID’s Diversity & Inclusion Committee.

What inspires you? Nature. We are very lucky to live in a rural part of the country

and I find the space and colours of the ever-changing seasons around us really feed our design work. I am also an avid follower of Instagram and social media and love seeing new designs from our suppliers and other interior designers. It’s wonderful to have such easy access to so much inspiration daily at the touch of a button.

Is there any business advice you wish you’d known when you started out? I wish I had realised that when you start a small business and want to grow then you have to accept that you will not be able to do all the jobs! Building a brilliant team is the key to building a successful business.

What’s your latest discovery at the Design Centre? Julian Chichester is one of my favourite showrooms. It is always beautifully presented and full of new treasures.

ANGELICA SQUIRE

Studio Squire is headed up by Angelica Squire, who founded her practice five years ago, seeking a more flexible working life after having her daughter. Her own house was featured as one of House & Garden’s top homes of 2021.

What inspires you? I am mostly inspired by the things around me – the seasons, the

weather, the landscape. Travel always puts a fresh perspective on one’s outlook and so that remains important, be it domestic or international.

What’s the thread that runs through every scheme, regardless of the aesthetic? Rooms that are liveable and personable with a generous smattering of colours and textures. It’s all about the various layers and levels when it comes to a successfully put-together room, in my view.

What projects have you got coming up? The redesign of a cult food shop and café in Chelsea, a large-scale family home in Belsize Park and a lateral apartment in Kensington.

What’s your latest discovery at the Design Centre? We always love a wander around the Vaughan showroom for the best lighting ideas. Many clients have been seeking interesting wall finishes, so Phillip Jeffries has been an ongoing source of inspiration.
