T

he cruise industry has been through a lot over the past few years, to say the least. With the pandemic finally easing its grip on tourism, the industry is getting back on its feet. After almost two years of standstill

and uncertainty, cruises are beginning to set sail again and guests are flocking to book for the summer. However, what should have been a summer of cruises has been impacted by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and rising fuel prices, with many cruise lines announcing itinerary changes and even cancellations. With difficult times ahead, our thoughts are with Ukraine and those impacted by the war. While my first edition of World Cruise Industry Review has been overshadowed by darker times than expected, there are still glimpses of hope for the industry and expectant travellers. On page 58, for instance, Andrea Valentino looks at the future of the Black Sea region in the face of the uncertainty that the conflict has created. In terms of cruise revival, on page 38 we explore the difficulties faced after such a long time at a standstill with Carnival Corporation senior vice-president and chief communications office Roger Frizzell, as he talks us through the top priorities for guests. In another instance of cruise restart, Elly Earls talks to Ama Waterways and Aqua Expeditions to find out about the evolution of Mekong river cruising and how its captivating experiences are fuelling recovery post-pandemic on page 50. Elsewhere in this issue, we look at the effect of hotels on ships and how they could continue to influence cruise interior design on page 20. 2022 has got off to a rocky start, with an expected return to normality being disturbed by the Russia–Ukraine war and rising fuel prices. But, in spite of that, we are still hopeful for recovery so that guests can set sail for adventure.
