HARDWOOD TRADERS QUIZ DEFRA ON EU REGULATION
UK hardwood traders have questioned whether they could be sent to prison under new EU legislation if some illegal timber found its way into their supply chain.
At a lively meeting at the London Hardwood Club (LHC), traders questioned Defra forestry team representative Nicola Sale about the upcoming EU Timber Regulation (EUTR), which criminalises the import of illegal timber. Ms Sale outlined the EUTR’s key areas of prohibition, due diligence and traceability requirements but said many details were yet to be finalised. The regulation will be implemented in March 2013.
Some of the 50 members in attendance expressed concern as to who the EUTR’s prohibition – the company first placing the product on the EU market – would apply to. Others wanted to know who would enforce it and whether it involved costs. Ms Sale admitted there could be some grey areas in defining who was first placing on the EU market, in which case the onus was on importers to do their due diligence to cover themselves. Guidance on this area will be released at the beginning of 2012.
RAPID RECOVERY OUT OF THE QUESTION
1981
Despite some good results, the overall performance of the UK timber industry has been “in the doldrums”, and a rapid recovery is considered “out of the question” by the compilers of the latest ICC Business Ratios report, based on the results of 60 leading companies. Titled ‘The timber industry (8th edition 1981/82)’, the report analyses the financial and managerial performance of these concerns and looks at key pointers, such as sales growth,
margins, return on investment and credit control.
UK PANEL INDUSTRIES TO UNITE
1991
A new federation is to be launched in 1992 to promote the complete wood- based panel industries from MDF and OSB to mediumboard, hardboard and cement- bonded particleboard. Called the Wood Panel Products Federation (WPPF), the new organisation – which hopes to be operating within two years – will combine the activities of the Fibre Building Board Organisation (Fidor), the UK and Ireland Particleboard Association (UKIPA) and the Cement Bonded Particleboard Association (CPA).

FULL HOUSE FOR AHEC CONFERENCE Fears that the added inconvenience of air travel post September 11 might have a serious impact on the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) annual European convention proved unfounded. The two-day conference drew hardwood traders from Ireland, the UK and across the rest of Europe, plus their suppliers from the US.
“The attendance demonstrates your trade responding to the White House’s appeal for a business as usual approach,” said Peter
Kurz, minister- counsellor at the US embassy in London in his opening address.
