SPONSOR | TIMBER MERCHANTING DEVELOPMENT AWARD (IN ASSOCIATION)
Builders Merchants Federation
he Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) exists to safeguard the interests of merchants and building materials suppliers across the UK and Ireland, with 1,020 member companies, employing nearly 200,000 people. We represent the multi-billion-pound supply chain that supports the construction, housebuilding, property repair, maintenance, and improvement (RMI) sector.
T
Timber is a crucial part of this supply chain. Timber is sold by more than half of the BMF’s merchant members and is the second biggest category within our BMBI (Builders Merchants Building Index), a monthly report compiled from members’ sales data. These award-winning reports are essential for monitoring trends and the UK’s only reliable RMI building activity measure, widely used by economists, government and media. Our mission is to help members excel, offering support from political advocacy to networking, industry debate, accredited training, career development, and analytical industry reports. We also provide access to specialist business services in HR, H&S, energy, insurance, transport and many other areas. The BMF is an active lobbyist with local and central
governments across the UK, with an impressive track record of achievements. Since 2020, as a member of the Construction Leadership Council, our influence has grown – working with industry partners to tackle challenges facing our members. If we don’t act now, the skills issue is set to become the biggest challenge for our sector as activity ramps up to deliver new homes and

infrastructure as part of the government’s growth agenda.
The BMF is making its largest-ever investment to address skills shortages, with a high-profile campaign designed to appeal to diverse audiences and generate awareness of the many and varied career opportunities offered by our members. The central website,
BMCareers.com, is already having an impact, engaging a broad range of visitors and connecting them with over 200 BMF members who have, to date, shared company details and vacancies. For both new and current employees, BMF training support is second to none, with a comprehensive range of online and in-person courses tailored to your business. “Timber as a Building Material”, for example, covers everything newcomers need and leads to a Level 3 Award in Timber Merchanting.
BMF members with an interest in timber shouldn’t
miss the BMF Timber Forum, chaired by Paul Pennick, procurement director of h&b Buying Group. The Timber Forum meets twice a year to discuss the latest issues and hear from expert speakers. Book your place at the next meeting via the Events page of
www.bmf.org.uk – the next forum takes place on September 30 at the NEC, Birmingham, during UK Construction Week. ■
