This energy- efficient technology is part of Hai Phong Port’s broader initiative to develop a green, smart seaport that adheres to international environmental standards. The cranes will not only improve the


port’s ability to handle larger vessels but enhance its operational efficiency, reducing turnaround times for ships and improving the overall flow of goods through the terminal. With a projected annual throughput of 1.1 million TEUs once the new terminals are operational, Hai Phong Port is set to become one of Vietnam’s most important trade gateways. Back in Europe, the Port of Hamburg is leading the way in port automation with the introduction of three remote-controlled gantry cranes at its Container Terminal Altenwerder (CTA). These cranes, which arrived in December 2024, are the first of their kind at the Port of Hamburg and represent a significant leap forward in container terminal automation. The gantry cranes are equipped with semi-automatic operation systems and remote control capabilities, meaning that operators will be able to monitor and control the cranes from a central office, rather than being physically present at the quay. This change significantly enhances safety, as operators are able to work from a distance, minimizing exposure to potential hazards. The cranes at CTA will also feature

container identification process. The cranes are designed to handle ships up to 16,000 TEUs, making them suitable for the largest container vessels in operation today. HHLA, the operator of the CTA


terminal, has long been at the forefront of automation and technology in the port sector. Over the next few years, HHLA plans to replace all 14 of its gantry cranes at CTA with similar remote-controlled models, further enhancing the terminal’s capacity and efficiency. As part of its long-term strategy to stay


ahead of the competition, HHLA is also investing in employee training programs to ensure that its workforce is prepared for the new technology. These training programs will be integrated into the company’s DigiRemote2030 project, which aims to provide workers with the skills needed to operate and manage the new automated


systems. In addition, HHLA has invested heavily in modernizing its infrastructure, with more than €1 billion spent on upgrading its container terminals over the past five years. A significant portion of this investment has been directed toward increasing automation and sustainability, reflecting HHLA’s commitment to a future-ready, environmentally responsible operation. One of the more intriguing innovations in


the container handling space is ELME’s 818 Innovation, a telescopic top-lift spreader designed for handling laden ISO containers weighing up to 45 tons. This spreader is built for use under


gantries at the front of lift trucks, and its new design offers a combination of increased structural strength and reduced weight. The 818 Innovation spreader features a system of parallel telescopic beams, which provide maximum overlap and allow the spreader to absorb both vertical and significant horizontal forces. This makes it highly effective for heavy- duty container handling, providing both greater safety and reliability. The spreader is also equipped with

an advanced Twistlock system, which is both rugged and reliable. The Twistlocks are hydraulically activated and feature mechanical interlocking to prevent faulty locking, ensuring that containers are securely attached before they are lifted. Furthermore, the spreader is designed with a gantry mounting system that automatically adapts to uneven ground or containers on trailers, ensuring smooth and efficient operations even in challenging conditions.
