APM TERMINALS SUAPE BREAKS GROUND ON LATIN AMERICA’S FIRST FULLY ELECTRIFIED TERMINAL
A
PM Terminals Suape has officially broken ground on Latin America’s first 100% electrified container terminal
at the Governador Eraldo Gueiros Industrial Port Complex in Pernambuco, Brazil. The $1.6 billion project, set to begin operations in 2026, is poised to transform the region’s logistics and port operations. The ceremony held late last year was attended by high-level officials, including Minister of Ports and Airports Silvio Costa Filho, Pernambuco Governor Raquel Lyra, and executives from APM Terminals and Maersk. The new terminal, which will generate
around 2,300 jobs, is expected to boost Pernambuco’s international trade connectivity while driving regional economic growth. The project will modernize the Port of Suape, enhancing
its competitiveness and handling capacity by 55%. It will also introduce pioneering sustainable practices, positioning the port as a leader in green port operations in the region. “Investments like this strengthen the
Port of Suape, and we are committed to growing Suape by 5% this year, creating more jobs and income for the people of Pernambuco,” said Costa Filho. Governor Lyra echoed the sentiment, highlighting the strategic location of the port and its potential to increase exports and attract new business opportunities for the state. APM Terminals managing director
for the Americas, Leo Huisman, emphasized the terminal’s role in creating a more competitive and efficient port network for both importers and exporters, offering

expanded berthing windows and new global connections. Daniel Rose, managing director for
APM Terminals Suape and Pecem, noted that the project is already advancing, following the successful completion of the largest demolition project in Pernambuco’s history. “This terminal will be the first fully electrified port in Latin America, bringing cutting-edge technology and sustainability to the region,” said Port of Suape President Marcio Guiot, highlighting the alignment of the project with environmental initiatives. The next phase of construction will
involve selecting contractors for key infrastructure elements, ensuring the terminal is ready to handle increased container traffic and meet the growing demands of global trade.
