LIEBHERR FIRST WEST COAST CONTRACT FOR STS CRANES WITH TRAPAC OAKLAND
L
iebherr Container Cranes has secured its first-ever contract to supply Ship-to-Shore (STS) cranes to the West Coast of the
United States, marking a major milestone in the company’s expansion. The contract, awarded by TraPac Oakland, a leading container terminal operator in California, includes two STS cranes that will enhance the terminal’s cargo handling capacity. While Liebherr has previously delivered
STS cranes to U.S. East Coast terminals, this marks the company’s inaugural shipment to the West Coast. The cranes, designed for high-efficiency operations, feature a 66-meter (216-foot) outreach, a 53-meter (173.83-foot) lift height, and a span of 30.48 meters (100 feet). With a lifting capacity of 66 long tonnes in twin- lift mode, these cranes are engineered to handle the world’s largest container vessels, making them critical to meeting the demands of modern shipping. The deal underscores Liebherr’s
growing footprint in the U.S. market and its commitment to supporting port
operators with cutting-edge technology and exceptional service. “We are delighted to partner with
TraPac Oakland and introduce Liebherr’s innovative crane technology to the U.S. West Coast. This milestone highlights our dedication to providing world-class container handling solutions tailored to the needs of terminal operators globally,” said Declan O’Sullivan, GM, Sales, Liebherr Container Cranes. Equipped with advanced semi-
automation systems and anti-collision technology, the new cranes are designed to ensure safe, precise, and efficient operations. Their capabilities will support terminal operators in maximizing productivity while maintaining high safety standards. The cranes are also backed by comprehensive service and support from Liebherr’s U.S. operations, further ensuring long-term success for port operators. Shane Kuhlmey, divisional director at Liebherr USA, emphasized the importance of the deal, stating, “TraPac Oakland’s
decision to invest in Liebherr’s advanced STS cranes is a significant step forward for our presence on the U.S. West Coast. This sale highlights not only the exceptional quality and innovation of our cranes but also our ability to meet the evolving needs of port operators in the region.” The cranes are part of TraPac’s broader
strategy to modernize its Oakland terminal, which has recently undergone a $67 million expansion nearly doubling its size. The cranes will enable TraPac to accommodate larger vessels and increase cargo throughput, improving operational flexibility and berth productivity. “This partnership marks an exciting
milestone as we continue to upgrade our service levels and exceed customer expectations. Liebherr’s cranes, known for their quality and design, will be crucial in enhancing the efficiency and capability of our terminal. Our collaboration with Liebherr has been seamless, and we look forward to a successful, long-term relationship,” added Cameron Thorpe, CEO, TraPac.
