FRAMATOME | ADVERTORIAL FEATURE

Fueling the future: Inside the Innovative Reactor Fuels Hub

As advanced nuclear technologies gain momentum worldwide, ensuring access to

high-performance and reliable fuel is becoming a defining challenge for the decade ahead. In this evolving landscape, Framatome is reinforcing its fuel capabilities to support the successful deployment of tomorrow’s advanced reactors.

THE INNOVATIVE REACTOR FUELS Hub brings together Framatome’s expertise, decades of know how in fuel design and manufacturing, state-of-the-art research and development (R&D) facilities, and a global industrial network dedicated to developing and delivering fuel solutions for advanced nuclear reactors.

A global answer to the needs of our partners in the U.S., Europe, and Asia The Innovative Reactor Fuels Hub is a multi regional, ultra connected network that brings together Framatome’s four Fuel Design units, worldwide fuel and zirconium alloy components fabrication capabilities and centers of excellence, and a robust network of R&D laboratories. These capabilities drive the Hub’s innovation efforts,

from advanced fuel research and additive manufacturing in Romans-sur-Isère (France), to the manufacturing center of excellence at HRR in Richland (U.S.) for advanced reactor fuels, to metallurgy, process simulation, and metallic component manufacturing in Ugine, Paimboeuf, and Montbard (France), and fuel assembly prototyping in Karlstein (Germany).

Fuel Solutions for Innovative Reactors ● For Light Water Small Modular Reactors (LW-SMRs),

the Hub leverages proven PWR and BWR advanced fuel designs — such as GAIA for PWRs — and benefits from the existing supply chain in Europe and the U.S. Modular fuel architectures and advanced technologies, including PROtect Enhanced Accident Tolerant Fuel and AFM high enrichment (>5%, LEU+) solutions, as well as optimized core designs, can be implemented to enhance economics, performance, and safety.

● For High Temperature Reactors (HTRs), Framatome’s

TRISO Fuel Solutions leverage global experience to support HTR and Micro Modular Reactor (MMR) projects at various maturity levels. In the United States, the Richland site is developing HALEU (High Assay Low Enriched Uranium) deconversion capabilities and has created a joint venture with Standard Nuclear to produce TRISO fuel at scale. Framatome is also building a new TRISO pilot line in Romans-sur-Isère (France) to support European HTR projects with U235 enrichment up to 20%, focusing on process qualification, development of TRISO fuel types, and continued innovation, while advancing simulation codes and methods for fuel design, performance justification, and licensing.

● For Fast Breeder Reactors, the Hub draws on decades of experience with MOX and metallic fuels. Our competences include fuel assembly design, licensing, and advanced manufacturing of fuel components — including cladding tubes — supported by a mature and secure supply chain.

Enabling the future of advanced nuclear technologies Together, the Hub’s capabilities form a unique and powerful platform, enabling Framatome to support customers from early concept through fuel qualification and industrial deployment. The Hub aims to partner directly with advanced reactor developers to collaborate on technological building blocks or to deliver complete fuel solutions, with readiness aligned to short and mid term deployment timelines. Through innovation, proven technologies, and global

collaboration, the Innovative Reactor Fuels Hub plays a pivotal role in enabling the safe and efficient deployment of the next generation of nuclear reactors — helping shape a more resilient and sustainable energy future. ■
