ADVANCING INDEPENDENT PHARMACY
Innovation with Purpose in Community Care
The Advancing Independent Pharmacy Award celebrates pharmacists and their teams who are embracing new technologies and progressive ways of working to strengthen patient care, improve safety and drive operational effectiveness within independent community pharmacy.
This award acknowledges that independent pharmacies are uniquely placed to innovate. Close to their communities and deeply familiar with local needs, they can move quickly, adapt creatively and design solutions that directly address real-world challenges. Judges look for initiatives that go beyond incremental improvement, demonstrating how technology, process redesign or novel thinking has been applied to improve safety, efficiency, resilience or patient experience.
Entries in this category often showcase how independent pharmacies are responding to increasing workload pressures, complex medication regimens and growing patient expectations.
Whether through digital systems, workflow redesign, automation or service transformation, the award celebrates innovation that is purposeful, measurable and rooted in day-to-day practice. Importantly, it recognises that advancing

pharmacy is not about innovation for its own sake, but about freeing up time for patient-facing care and supporting safer, more sustainable ways of working - delivering real, practical advancement for patients, professionals and pharmacy businesses alike.
Last year’s winner, Lowwood Pharmacy, exemplified this ethos through the development of Script Checker, a bespoke digital solution designed to improve the safety and accuracy of compliance aids for patients with complex medication needs. Developed in-house by a member of the dispensary team, the system used barcode scanning and automated checks to reduce dispensing risk and cut prescription checking time by around 30%.
This allowed pharmacists to redirect valuable time towards medication reviews and patient consultations,
delivering clear benefits for both safety and care quality.
Crucially, Lowwood Pharmacy’s approach demonstrated that meaningful innovation can originate from within the pharmacy team itself. By harnessing internal skills, testing collaboratively and sharing learning beyond their own business, they showed how independent pharmacies can contribute to wider professional progress while strengthening their own operations.
The Advancing Independent Pharmacy Award recognises this kind of leadership: innovation grounded in practice, driven by people and focused on patient wellbeing. It celebrates independent pharmacies that are not only adapting to change, but actively shaping the future of community pharmacy through thoughtful, technology-enabled advancement.
